Chapter 1: The Broken Halo

"No, please, stop cutting my hair!" Lily screamed, her voice cracking as hot tears streamed down her flushed cheeks.
She sat rigidly on the white wrought-iron garden chair, her fingers clutching the damp fabric of her white party dress, its colorful pastel tutu bunched awkwardly around her waist. Behind her stood Clara, her grandmother, wearing a floral blouse that rustled softly with every calculated movement. Clara’s face bore a chilling, serene smile, entirely detached from the cruelty of her actions. In her right hand, she wielded a pair of heavy tailoring scissors, their steel blades flashing menacingly in the golden afternoon sunlight filtering through the oak trees. With a swift, sickening crunch of shearing locks, a thick golden braid fell from Lily’s head, fluttering down onto the manicured green lawn like a wounded bird.

A few feet away, ten-year-old Toby stood frozen in disbelief. He clutched his silver tablet so tightly his knuckles turned white, his eyes wide as he stared at the gruesome scene unfolding before him. The colorful birthday balloons tied to the white picket fence bobbed gently in the breeze, mocking the surreal horror of the moment. On the patio table nearby, a three-tiered frosted birthday cake sat untouched, its candles unlit, surrounded by gaily wrapped gifts that suddenly felt like markers of an ambush.
Suddenly, the wooden gate at the side of the yard burst open with a loud bang. Elena, Lily and Toby’s mother, sprinted into the backyard. Her face was pale, her hair hastily pinned back, still wearing her royal blue medical scrubs from the hospital shift she had just abandoned. Taking in the horrific tableau, Elena didn't hesitate. With a primal roar of maternal fury, she lunged forward, shoving Clara hard against the shoulder. The older woman stumbled backward, dropping the scissors into the grass, yet her sinister smile never faltered. Elena dropped to her knees, pulling weeping Lily into a fierce, protective embrace, burying the child's mutilated head against her shoulder. "It's okay, baby. Mommy is here. I've got you," Elena whispered, glaring daggers up at Clara, realizing with absolute dread that the nightmare inside their home was only just beginning to unravel.
