Chapter 8: The Basement Theater

The narrow concrete corridor terminated at a heavy steel fire door fitted with a digital keypad lock. Marcus paused, pressing his ear against the cold metal. Faint, muffled sounds filtered through from the other side—the rhythmic, metallic click of surgical instruments being sorted on a stainless steel tray, accompanied by the low murmur of a controlled, chillingly polite voice.
""You really should have learned when to stop digging, Clara,"" Julian Thorne’s voice resonated clearly through the acoustic seal of the door. ""Curiosity is a fatal flaw in corporate compliance.""
Marcus’s blood ran cold. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small electronic bypass device he had salvaged from the hospital’s biomedical engineering lab—a basic signal repeater designed to spoof maintenance overrides on restricted facility doors. He plugged the device into the data port beneath the keypad. The small LED light flickered rapidly from amber to green. With a soft pneumatic hiss, the heavy steel door unlatched.
Marcus slipped through the threshold, closing the door silently behind him.
He found himself standing in the observation gallery of a makeshift subterranean operating theater. Below him, separated by a reinforced glass partition, was a fully equipped surgical suite. In the center of the room stood a hydraulic operating table. Clara was strapped to the leather restraints, her hospital gown replaced by a surgical smock. Her face was deathly pale, the bruising around her neck looking even more severe under the harsh, shadowless glare of overhead surgical lamps.
Standing beside the table was a man in sterile scrubs and a surgical mask, holding a tray of scalpels and nerve blocks. Julian Thorne stood nearby, his grey blazer removed, wearing only a dark dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing forearms covered in faint, faded scars.
""Is the sedative reaching peak saturation, Dr. Hayes?"" Julian asked, turning to the man in the surgical mask.
The masked doctor nodded, his voice muffled. ""Full neural suppression in three minutes. She won't feel anything when we execute the targeted memory suppression protocol. The data on the micro-SD card will be rendered inaccessible once the localized EMP pulse fries the retrieval drives in her neural implant.""
Marcus stared down through the glass, his brain struggling to process the technical horror of what he was hearing. This wasn't just a domestic assault covered up by corrupt police; it was a corporate abduction involving advanced experimental neuro-technology designed to permanently erase whistleblowers from the inside out. Clara had a neural interface implanted—likely a condition of her employment at Julian’s security firm—and they were about to wipe her memory clean to protect their illicit financial ledgers.
Julian walked over to the head of the operating table, leaning down to whisper something into Clara’s ear. Clara couldn't speak, her eyes wide with terror as the paralytic agents began to lock her jaw and limbs in place.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He unzipped his canvas trauma bag, withdrew a heavy-duty industrial carbon-dioxide fire extinguisher mounted on the wall beside the gallery door, and smashed the glass viewing partition with a deafening crash.

Shattered safety glass rained down into the surgical suite below like diamond hail. Julian whipped around, his calm demeanor shattering into sudden, furious shock as Marcus vaulted through the jagged opening, landing heavily on the tiled floor with his surgical scalpel drawn.
