Chapter 11: The Descent from Blackwood

The cold rain slammed into Marcus’s face as he carried Clara down the grand granite steps of the Blackwood Estate, the smoke billowing from the burning north wing behind them like a banner of rebellion. The utility van was parked fifty yards away in the thicket of rhododendron bushes where he had left it. Every muscle in his arms screamed under Clara’s weight, but adrenaline kept his stride steady and unbroken.
As they reached the vehicle, the distinctive crunch of heavy tires on gravel echoed through the clearing. A black tactical SUV crested the estate's main drive, its headlights cutting through the blinding rain. Through the windshield, Marcus recognized the familiar silhouette of Detective Miller behind the wheel, flanked by two armed municipal patrolmen.
They weren't Julian’s private security anymore; they were the full weight of compromised local law enforcement arriving to clean up the crime scene.
""Marcus, get in,"" Clara gasped, her strength partially returning as she grabbed the door handle of the utility van and pulled it open with a sharp click.
Marcus bundled her into the passenger seat, slammed the door shut, and vaulted into the driver's seat just as Detective Miller’s SUV slammed to a halt, blocking the narrow gravel exit path. The cruiser's emergency strobes painted the falling rain in violent flashes of red and blue.
Detective Miller stepped out of the SUV, holding a service pistol steady in a two-handed grip. He didn't bother using a loudspeaker; his voice carried clearly over the roar of the idling engine and the hammering rain.
""Dr. Vance! Cut the engine and step out of the vehicle with your hands visible! You are interfering with a federal counter-terrorism operation!""
Marcus stared through the rain-streaked windshield at the veteran detective. The badge pinned to Miller’s chest no longer represented justice; it was a brand of corporate ownership. Marcus placed his hand on the gear shift, shifting the van into four-wheel drive.
""He's not going to let us leave, Marcus,"" Clara whispered, her pale blue eyes fixed on the armed men surrounding them. ""If we stop, we don't make it to daylight.""
Marcus looked over at her, noting the fierce, unbroken resolve in her gaze. She wasn't the terrified victim he had found in room 412; she was a survivor ready to take back her life.
""Hold on to something,"" Marcus said quietly.
He didn't hit the brakes. Instead, he slammed his foot down hard on the accelerator. The heavy utility van roared, its rear tires spinning furiously in the wet gravel before biting into the mud and surging forward like a charging beast.
Detective Miller shouted an oath, raising his pistol, but as the van hurtled directly toward the gap between the SUV and the steep embankment, the detective instinctively dove out of the way into the muddy ditch.
With a sickening crunch of grinding metal, the utility van clipped the rear quarter-panel of the police cruiser, sending a shower of sparks flying into the air. The impact jolted Marcus violently against the steering wheel, but the van didn't stall. It battered its way past the obstruction, clearing the iron estate gates and careening wildly down the winding mountain road toward the city below.

In the rearview mirror, Marcus watched the black SUV spin out in the gravel, its flashing lights disappearing into the fog as they hurtled down the steep descent toward civilization.
