Chapter 6: The Decoy Route

The dark grey utility van hummed quietly beneath Marcus as he navigated the labyrinthine industrial outskirts of the city. The dashboard GPS glowed with a single crimson dot, plotting a course away from the municipal grid and toward the dense, fog-shrouded pine forests flanking the Blackwood mountains. The rain had begun to spit against the windshield, blurring the glare of distant highway lights into long, weeping streaks.

Marcus gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white. His mind raced through the tactical implications of his pursuit. He was driving an unverified vehicle provided by unknown underground operatives, chasing a ruthless corporate security director into an isolated private compound. By every rational metric of self-preservation, he should have turned around, called an independent federal tip line from a burner phone, and let the authorities handle it. But the memory of Detective Miller’s cold, complicit stare in the hospital room reminded him that the authorities *were* the problem.

As he rounded a sharp curve past the municipal water treatment facility, the headlights of the van caught a pair of flashing red and blue lights parked haphazardly on the shoulder. Marcus instinctively eased off the accelerator, letting the van coast into the deep shadows of an overhanging cedar tree.

Parked thirty yards ahead was a marked police cruiser. Next to it stood Detective Miller, leaning against the hood with a cigarette glowing faintly in the damp air. Behind him, an unmarked black ambulance sat with its rear doors wide open, strobe lights pulsing silently against the dark foliage.

Marcus held his breath, sliding down slightly in the driver's seat. This was the decoy transport Julian had mentioned in the chat interface. Thorne’s syndicate had staged a fake medical transfer along the primary highway to draw potential pursuit, while Clara was likely being moved via an alternate, subterranean or air route.

Detective Miller checked his wristwatch, flicked his cigarette butt into the wet pavement, and climbed back into the cruiser. The ambulance doors slammed shut, and both vehicles executed a synchronized U-turn, accelerating back toward the city center with lights flashing but sirens silent.

Marcus exhaled a long, shaky breath. The deception was layered, intricate, and ruthlessly efficient. If he had followed the main highway as a typical pursuer would, he would have walked straight into an ambush set by Detective Miller’s corrupt patrol unit. The anonymous hackers directing him via the dashboard GPS had saved him from a trap before he even reached the perimeter.

The dashboard terminal beeped softly, displaying a new message: ""Decoy engaged. Main convoy cleared the toll plaza. You have a four-minute window before the estate's automated security perimeter resets its internal patrols. Step on it, Doctor.""

Marcus shifted the van into drive, punching the accelerator. The vehicle surged forward, roaring into the dense fog. The tarmac gave way to cracked asphalt, then eventually to a private, unpaved gravel road marked by rusted iron gates bearing the faded insignia of Blackwood Timber & Land.

The forest canopy closed overhead, shutting out the faint glow of municipal light pollution. The darkness here was absolute, pierced only by the piercing beams of the van’s high-intensity headlights. The GPS map showed the terrain rising steeply, winding upward toward a plateau where a sprawling Victorian-era mansion sat isolated from the rest of the world.

As Marcus drove deeper into the estate grounds, the temperature dropped noticeably. His breath plumed in the cab as the heater fought a losing battle against the chill. He reviewed the contents of his emergency trauma bag in the passenger seat, ensuring the scalpels, sutures, and combat gauze were within easy reach. He wasn't walking into a medical facility this time; he was entering a fortress designed to hide secrets that powerful men would kill to protect.
