Chapter 2: The Weight of a Badge

The silence in the hospital room grew suffocating as the veteran police officer lowered his hand, his eyes locked onto Julian Thorne rather than the bruised woman in the bed. Marcus felt the blood rush to his ears, the betrayal stinging sharper than any scalpel. He looked down at Clara’s trembling hand resting on his blue scrubs, feeling the frantic, shallow rhythm of her pulse beneath his fingertips.
""Detective Miller,"" Julian said, nodding respectfully to the older officer. ""I appreciate your prompt response. Dr. Vance was just expressing his professional concern over Mrs. Vance’s unfortunate accident.""
Marcus whipped his head around, staring incredulously at Julian. ""Mrs. Vance? You said she was an acquaintance in the waiting room triage intake! You lied on official hospital documentation.""
""Medical intake paperwork is notoriously rushed during emergencies, Doctor,"" Julian replied smoothly, stepping closer to the bed while maintaining a polite, professional distance. ""Clara and I are legally married. Domestic privacy laws permit a certain latitude when managing familial health crises. Isn't that right, Detective?""
Detective Miller nodded slowly, stepping further into the room and blocking the doorway entirely. The second officer remained stationed by the entrance, his hand resting casually near his utility belt, eyes fixed firmly on Marcus. The institutional machinery of protection was shifting gears, and Marcus realized with a chilling certainty that the hospital walls were no longer a sanctuary. They were a containment zone.
""Doctor Vance,"" Detective Miller said, his voice flat and devoid of warmth. ""The Department of Public Safety received Mr. Thorne’s domestic incident report filed earlier this evening. A tragic household mishap involving a faulty marble threshold in their master bathroom. The state has already dispatched a mobile forensic unit to process the residence.""
""Process the residence?"" Marcus’s voice rose, vibrating with suppressed fury. ""There is nothing to process in a bathroom that didn't cause these injuries! Look at her throat, Detective! Those are human fingers! Specifically, adult male hands with a distinct structural grip pattern. I've treated assault victims for twelve years. I know what domestic violence looks like, and I know what a cover-up looks like!""
Clara let out a low, ragged moan, her head turning painfully against the pillow. Her eyelids fluttered, and she forced the words past her swollen lips, her voice barely a dry whisper. ""Marcus... stop. Please.""
Marcus immediately softened, leaning over the bed. ""Clara, you don't have to protect him. You are safe here. I am not letting him take you anywhere.""
Julian sighed, a theatrical display of weary patience. He walked over to the IV pole, checking the saline drip rate with clinical detachment. ""Clara is in a fragile state of mind, Doctor. The concussion has caused retrograde amnesia and severe paranoia. She frequently accuses me of things that exist only in her fractured imagination. The consulting psychiatrist has already signed off on her discharge to our private care facility.""
Marcus straightened up, his eyes narrowing. ""No psychiatrist has evaluated her tonight. I checked the electronic health record thirty minutes ago. She is under my direct medical care for the next twenty-four hours.""
May you like
Julian smiled, reaching into his blazer pocket again and pulling out a signed, stamped court-ordered medical transfer document. ""Things move very quickly at my level, Marcus. You'd be wise to keep pace.""
