Chapter 13: The Siege at the Courthouse

The heavy steel security doors of the federal courthouse basement closed behind the utility van with a definitive, mechanical thud that echoed like a vault door locking. Marcus killed the engine, letting out a long, shuddering breath as the overwhelming tension of the past twelve hours finally began to recede from his shoulders.

Before he could even unbuckle his seatbelt, the passenger-side door was pulled open by a tall, middle-aged woman in a charcoal suit, wearing the gold lapel pin of a federal senior inspector. Her silver-streaked hair was tied back in a strict bun, and her eyes missed nothing as they swept over Clara wrapped in her emergency blanket.

""Dr. Vance, I presume?"" she asked, her voice crisp and authoritative. ""I am Inspector Sarah Vance—no relation, unfortunately. My team has been monitoring your signal since you left the hospital archive.""

Marcus stepped out of the van into the brightly lit, sterile concrete bay, nodding respectfully. ""Inspector. We don't have much time. Julian Thorne's private security detail knows we broke containment. They could mobilize local assets to intercept this facility within twenty minutes.""

Inspector Vance gave a cold, confident smile, pulling a small silver reader from her briefcase. ""Let them try, Doctor. This building operates under federal anti-espionage jurisdiction. Municipal police departments have no legal standing within fifty yards of this perimeter.""

She extended her hand toward Marcus. He didn't hesitate, pulling the micro-SD card from his pocket and placing it firmly into her palm. Inspector Vance inserted the card into her portable reader. A small screen illuminated her face, scrolling rapidly through lines of encrypted data, offshore bank routing numbers, and high-definition video logs of the Blackwood Estate operations.

""It's all here,"" Inspector Vance murmured, her eyes widening slightly as the file validation completed. ""Every shell company, every municipal bribe, and the direct authorization logs for the neural suppression protocol.""

Suddenly, the secure bay's exterior intercom system crackled to life, emitting a sharp burst of static before Julian Thorne’s voice—smooth, icy, and amplified—echoed off the concrete walls.

""Inspector Vance,"" Julian’s voice resonated through the speaker, carrying an unsettling calm. ""You are currently holding property belonging to Blackwood Security & Infrastructure under a federal overreach protocol. I advise you to surrender Dr. Vance and Mrs. Vance immediately, or your facility will experience a complete digital and physical grid isolation.""

Inspector Vance didn't even flinch. She tapped her lapel mic, her voice carrying a razor-sharp edge as she spoke into the communications relay. ""Mr. Thorne, this is Inspector Sarah Vance, Federal Oversight Division. You are currently speaking on an intercepted line being recorded for a multi-count federal indictment charging you with corporate racketeering, kidnapping, and attempted murder. Stay where you are. Federal marshals are already en route to your corporate headquarters.""

A heavy, suffocating silence hung over the loading bay for three agonizing seconds. Then, the intercom emitted a sharp click, and the line went dead.
