Chapter 5

The central shower room was a cavernous, tiled chamber where the air was always thick with lingering steam and the sharp tang of industrial bleach. Overhead, only a single emergency bulb cast a dim, amber glow across the slick white tiles, creating long, distorted shadows that danced along the walls. The water pipes occasionally hissed, letting out erratic bursts of scalding steam that added to the suffocating atmosphere.
Inmate 102 stepped past the heavy rubber threshold, his footsteps echoing softly in the vast, empty space. He didn't have to wait long. From the shadows near the back row of shower stalls, four heavy figures stepped out, blocking the only exit. Leading them was Bruno, stripped to the waist, his massive frame gleaming with sweat under the amber light. In his right hand, he dragged a thick length of rusted iron pipe along the wet floor, creating a harsh, grating screech that scraped against the eardrums.
"I knew you were arrogant, kid, but walking right into a trap without a weapon? That's not bravery. That's just plain stupid," Bruno sneered, his voice dripping with malice as he closed the distance between them. His lieutenants fanned out, cutting off any possibility of retreat, their faces twisted into ugly grins of anticipation.
Inmate 102 did not speak. He stood in the center of the room, his weight evenly distributed on the balls of his feet, his hands hanging loosely at his sides. He watched Bruno's shoulders, reading the subtle shifts in muscle tension that signaled an impending attack.
With a roar, Bruno lunged forward, swinging the heavy iron pipe in a vicious horizontal arc aimed directly at the young man's ribs. The blow possessed enough kinetic force to shatter bone and rupture internal organs. But just as the metal reached striking distance, Inmate 102 dropped low, sliding across the slick tiled floor with astonishing speed. The pipe whistled through empty air above his head, striking a concrete pillar with a deafening clang that sent sparks flying into the dark.
Before Bruno could retract the heavy weapon, Inmate 102 surged upward, driving the heel of his palm directly upward into Bruno's chin. The impact snapped the enforcer's head back with a sharp crack, stunning him instantly. As Bruno stumbled back, gasping for air, two of the lieutenants rushed in from the flanks, throwing wild, uncoordinated punches driven by pure panic.

Inmate 102 moved like a shadow through a storm. He parried a wild right hook, using his attacker's own momentum to spin him around and hurl him headfirst into the tiled wall. The man slumped to the floor, unconscious before he even hit the ground. The remaining two thugs hesitated, staring in sheer disbelief at how effortlessly their dominant force was being dismantled. That momentary hesitation was all the opening the young man needed. With two swift, precise strikes to their vital pressure points, both men folded inward, collapsing onto the wet concrete.
Bruno was left alone, leaning heavily against the tiled wall, clutching his jaw, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps. He looked at the young Asian inmate standing before him without a single drop of sweat on his brow, and for the first time in his criminal life, true terror gripped his soul.
