Chapter 14

The transition from the suffocating enclosure of Maximum Federal to the open world outside felt surreal. The crisp autumn breeze carried the scent of fallen leaves and distant traffic—sounds and smells that Wei had not truly experienced in years. Standing on the sunlit steps outside the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago, he held a manila folder containing the final dismissal of all fabricated charges against his family name.

Across the brick plaza, a familiar figure waited beside a rusted sedan. Officer Miller, now retired and wearing a comfortable civilian jacket, raised a paper coffee cup in quiet greeting as Wei approached.

"The federal prosecutors are still picking through Vance's digital ledger," Miller said, offering a warm, respectful smile as he handed over a fresh cup of black coffee. "Apex Global's stock has completely collapsed, and a congressional oversight committee has launched a full investigation into private prison contracts nationwide. Your father's name has been officially cleared of all wrongdoing, and the family dry cleaning property is being restored to your estate."

Wei accepted the coffee, taking a slow, appreciative sip. The bitter warmth grounded him, chasing away the lingering chill of the cell blocks. "It wasn't just about clearing a name, Officer Miller. It was about proving that even the most deeply entrenched corruption can be dismantled if someone is simply willing to stand up and refuse to bow."

Miller chuckled, shaking his head as he looked out over the bustling city streets. "You're a remarkable young man, Chen Wei. The world out there is complicated, but I have a feeling you're going to use your brilliance to build something much better than what you tore down."

"I intend to," Wei replied softly.

They parted ways with a firm handshake—two men bonded by an extraordinary chapter of survival and redemption. Wei turned and walked down the wide stone steps, his steps light and confident. He pulled the worn photograph of his parents from his pocket, gazing down at their smiling faces one last time before sliding it safely into his jacket's inner lining. The past could no longer chain him; the future lay ahead, wide open and unwritten.
