Chapter 11

The pale light of the encrypted tablet cast a sharp, blue glow across Wei's face as he worked through the midnight hours. Every keystroke was executed with ruthless efficiency, copying gigabytes of encrypted evidence, financial wire transfers, and internal memos directly to a secure, decentralized cloud ledger that could never be erased or traced back to his cell. Warden Vance believed he had captured a brilliant criminal to exploit for his own gain; he had no idea he had just handed the keys to his entire kingdom to a digital ghost.
As the progress bar on the screen reached ninety-nine percent, a soft tap echoed against the steel bars of cell 408. Wei didn't flinch. He slipped the tablet into the secret lining of his mattress, stood up smoothly, and walked over to the door.
Officer Miller stood in the dim corridor, peering through the small barred window with a tense, anxious expression. The night shift was nearing its end, and the prison was cloaked in an unnatural, heavy silence.
"Did you get it?" Miller whispered urgently, his breath misting slightly in the cool air of the tier. "The federal marshals are scheduled for an unannounced compliance audit next Tuesday morning. If we don't upload the evidence to the Department of Justice secure drop before then, Vance's legal team will scrub the servers and we'll end up buried right alongside them."
Wei leaned close to the bars, his voice calm and steady. "The entire archive is secured and backed up off-site, Officer. Every wire transfer, every corrupt contract, every name involved in the Apex Global conspiracy. Vance signed his own federal indictment the moment he handed me that tablet."
Miller let out a long, shuddering breath, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead. A mixture of profound relief and nervous anticipation washed over his weathered face. "Good. Because things are about to get very messy. Bruno and his crew have been whispering in the yard. They know Vance brought you to his office, and they think you cut a deal that cuts them out of the protection racket. They're planning something big for recreation hour tomorrow—something the guards have been ordered to look the other way on."
May you like
Wei's expression hardened. "Let them try. This ends tomorrow, once and for all."
Miller nodded slowly, tapping his flashlight against his belt before turning down the corridor to complete his final security sweep. Wei returned to his bunk, closing his eyes for a few hours of deep, restorative rest. He knew that the final confrontation would not be fought with fists or iron pipes in a dark shower room, but in the glaring light of the recreation yard, where the entire corrupt system would finally be forced to face accountability.
