Chapter 12

The Friday morning recreation bell rang with a harsh, metallic clang that reverberated across the razor-wire-topped exercise yard. Inmates streamed out of the cell blocks in a dense, restless wave, scattering across the gravel expanse. The autumn air was biting, but the tension hanging over the yard was suffocating. Every eye drifted toward the center where Inmate 102 stood alone, perfectly calm, his posture relaxed as he waited for the inevitable storm to break.
From the far corner near the weightlifting station, Bruno emerged flanked by nearly twenty hardened inmates—a coalition of gang enforcers and cartel muscle who had put aside their differences to eliminate the single threat to their prison dominance. Hidden behind the protective circle of rioting inmates, Bruno held a heavy, sharpened steel shank fashioned from a broken mop handle, his face twisted in a mask of vengeful fury.
Officer Miller watched from the observation platform, his hand resting tightly on the security alarm lever. The tower guards had stepped away from their posts, executing Warden Vance's final, desperate order to let the yard tear itself apart and quietly dispose of the problematic inmate.
As Bruno's mob began to close in, forming a tight, inescapable ring around Wei, the rest of the yard scattered in sheer panic. The guards turned their backs, pretending not to see the impending massacre.
Wei did not move. He stood his ground, taking one slow, measured breath as the circle tightened around him. When Bruno lunged forward with the sharpened shank aimed straight at his chest, time seemed to fracture. Wei sidestepped the lethal blow with breathtaking fluidity, using Bruno's massive momentum against him to send him crashing headfirst into the gravel.
Before the surrounding enforcers could react, Wei moved through the crowd like a swirling tempest—redirecting punches, utilizing joint locks, and disarming attackers with clinical precision. In less than a minute, half of Bruno's coalition lay groaning on the dusty ground, clutching broken wrists and bruised ribs. The remaining thugs froze in absolute terror, dropping their improvised weapons and backing away from the young man as if he were a demon incarnate.

Bruno scrambled up from the gravel, his nose bleeding, his eyes wild with unhinged rage. He raised a heavy metal pipe he had scavenged, screaming at the top of his lungs as he charged one last time.
Before the blow could land, the piercing shriek of federal sirens suddenly split the air. Not the standard prison alarm, but the wailing sirens of federal black-and-whites and unmarked SUVs crashing through the front security gates.
