Chapter 7: Packing for Exile

The afternoon sun began to dip toward the horizon, casting long, amber rays across the modern kitchen. Time was of the essence. Elena knew that Marcus would make his one phone call from the precinct soon, alerting his handlers at Apex Defense Solutions that he had been arrested and that the ledger was unaccounted for.

“Get what you need for a few days, Aunt Martha. Pack light—only essentials, medications, and identification,” Elena instructed, moving quickly to secure the ledger inside her military-issue tactical backpack alongside her service tablet.

Martha nodded, pushing herself up from the dining chair with a wince. Her bruised ribs ached with every movement, but the adrenaline of survival pushed her forward. She shuffled slowly down the hallway toward her bedroom, leaving Elena alone in the kitchen for a brief moment.

Elena’s eyes drifted back to the crime scene: the fallen baseball bat, the evidence bag containing Martha’s bloody eyeglasses, and the faint smear of dried blood on the pristine marble floor. It was a harrowing reminder of how close she had come to losing the only maternal figure she had left in the world. She walked over to the evidence bag left behind by the technicians, picking up the small plastic pouch containing the broken eyeglasses. The bent frames and shattered lenses symbolized the fragility of human life when pitted against unchecked greed and violence. She slipped the pouch into her tactical pack, vowing that justice would be served for every drop of blood spilled on this floor.

A sudden vibration in her uniform pocket broke her concentration. Elena pulled out her secure military-encrypted smartphone. The screen displayed an incoming secure transmission from Major Thomas Vance—her commanding officer and distant cousin, who had no direct connection to Marcus’s illegal dealings.

She swiped to accept, keeping her voice strictly professional. “Captain Vance.”

“Elena, report,” Major Vance’s voice crackled through the encrypted channel, tense and urgent. “We’ve intercepted automated police band chatter regarding a domestic disturbance at your family residence involving a suspect named Marcus Sterling. Are you secure?”

“Negative on secure, Major, but the situation is contained for the moment,” Elena replied crisply, stepping away from the windows to ensure privacy. “The suspect is in local police custody following an assault on my aunt. However, I’ve uncovered evidence linking the suspect to a massive financial fraud scheme involving Apex Defense Solutions.”

A heavy silence hung on the line for several seconds before Major Vance spoke again. “Apex? Are you certain, Captain? That contract feeds directly into our active deployment zones.”

“I have the physical ledger in my possession, Major. It details kickbacks, money laundering, and illegal procurement routing linked directly to high-ranking corporate executives within Apex. They are using civilian fronts to bleed the defense budget dry.”

“Listen to me very carefully, Elena,” Major Vance warned, his tone dropping to a grim whisper. “Apex has powerful friends in Washington. If you have that ledger, you are walking target. Get out of that house immediately. Report to Sector 4 military barracks. I’ll meet you there with an armed escort.”
