Chapter 3: Securing the Scene

As the low static of the radio transmission faded, Elena kept her focus locked onto Marcus. He shifted restlessly on his feet, realizing that his window of evasion was rapidly closing. The bright sunlight pouring through the kitchen windows seemed stark and merciless, illuminating the stark contrast between the military precision of Elena’s uniform and the dark, violent reality of Marcus’s actions.
“Don’t bother calling the cops, Elena,” Marcus spat, his voice dropping into a harsh, warning register. “You’ll ruin everything we’ve built. You’ll destroy this family completely.”
“You destroyed this family the moment you raised a weapon against an elderly woman, Marcus,” Elena retorted steadily. She took another step forward, forcing him to yield ground toward the pantry doors.
On the floor, Martha finally found her voice, a dry, raspy sound that commanded immediate attention. “Elena… leave him be. Just help me up, please.”
Elena glanced down, her expression softening infinitesimally. She knelt beside her aunt, keeping one eye on Marcus at all times. Gently, she slid her strong hands beneath Martha’s frail arms, hoisting her up with practiced care and settling her into a nearby wooden dining chair. The close proximity allowed Elena to take in the full extent of the injuries: the deep purple bruising around Martha’s cheek, the swelling of her right eye, and the raw graze on her collarbone.
“I’m calling an ambulance, Aunt Martha,” Elena said quietly, pulling out her mobile phone.
“No hospital,” Martha whispered urgently, gripping Elena’s wrist with surprising strength. “We need to find the ledger first. That’s what he was looking for.”

Elena frowned, her gaze shifting back to Marcus. The aggressive man was now pacing near the kitchen island, his eyes darting anxiously toward a sleek leather briefcase resting on the counter. The pieces of the puzzle began to assemble in Elena’s mind. This was not merely a random act of domestic abuse fueled by sudden rage; it was a targeted, premeditated assault driven by greed, financial coercion, and a missing document that held dark secrets regarding the family estate.
Sirens wailed faintly in the distance, growing louder with every passing second. Marcus stopped pacing, his chest heaving as he realized time had run out. He lunged toward the briefcase on the counter, but Elena was faster. With fluid, decisive motion, she intercepted him, slamming her palm down onto the leather surface and blocking his path. The confrontation had escalated past words; the battle lines were drawn.
