Chapter 5: Uncovering the Ledger

As the police officers escorted Marcus out through the front doors, the heavy atmosphere in the kitchen shifted from chaotic violence to tense anticipation. Officer Davies remained behind to take a preliminary statement from Elena and ensure Martha received proper medical attention. Paramedics hovered nearby with a portable trauma kit, gently cleaning the abrasions on Martha’s face while she refused transport to the emergency room, insisting she was fine as long as she stayed in her own home.

Elena turned her attention back to the leather briefcase resting on the marble island. With Marcus gone, the room felt marginally safer, yet the underlying threat remained palpable. She unlatched the brass clasps of the briefcase and lifted the lid. Inside lay a neat stack of financial documents, property deeds, and a worn leather-bound ledger with gold-embossed lettering across the spine.

“Is that what he was looking for?” Elena asked softly, looking down at her aunt.

Martha nodded slowly, wincing as the paramedic dabbed antiseptic near her swollen eye. “Yes. That ledger contains the complete accounting of the family foundation over the past decade. Every transaction, every donation, and every fraudulent withdrawal that Marcus orchestrated behind my back.”

Officer Davies stepped closer, eyeing the document with professional interest. “That constitutes crucial evidence of financial fraud and embezzlement, Captain Vance. I’ll need to impound that briefcase and log it into police custody immediately.”

Elena hesitated, her instincts as a military intelligence officer kicking in. She knew how easily evidence could be compromised or manipulated within a municipal police department plagued by political pressure. “Officer Davies, I am placing this ledger under military jurisdiction as part of an ongoing federal investigation into interstate financial crimes connected to military contractors. I will secure the physical evidence personally, and provide certified copies to your precinct within the hour.”

Davies blinked in surprise, staring at the uncompromising authority radiating from the young captain. He recognized that arguing with a senior military officer invoking federal protocols was a losing battle, especially given the clear evidence of domestic abuse and corruption. “Very well, Captain. But I’ll need a formal chain of custody signature before I leave the premises.”

Elena signed the transfer log without hesitation, her handwriting neat and precise. As Davies packed up his gear and departed to process Marcus at the station, Elena picked up the ledger. Opening the first page, she saw names, bank routing numbers, and signatures that made her blood run cold. Marcus hadn't just been stealing from an old woman; he was laundering money for a dangerous private security firm that had deep ties to her own military division.
