Chapter 2: Immediate Aftermath

The heavy thud of the baseball bat echoing against the marble floors subsided, leaving only the sound of ragged breathing in the sunlit kitchen. Elena Vance did not break eye contact with Marcus Sterling, whose muscular frame remained tense and combative beneath his fitted grey shirt. Every micro-expression on Marcus’s face betrayed a toxic blend of anger and calculated desperation. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other, sizing up the military officer who stood between him and his intended victim.

Elena maintained her authoritative posture, her striking blue eyes scanning the perimeter of the room to ensure no other threats were present. She stepped fully into the kitchen, her polished black service shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone. With a subtle nod of reassurance toward the kneeling woman, Elena acknowledged Martha Vance without turning her back on Marcus.

“Step away from her, Marcus. Hands where I can see them,” Elena ordered, her tone devoid of emotion yet brimming with lethal competence.

Marcus let out a dry, contemptuous laugh, shaking his head. “This is a private family matter, Captain Vance. You have no jurisdiction inside this house.”

“Assaulting an elderly citizen in her own home is a federal crime, not a private matter,” Elena replied smoothly, closing the distance between them with measured, deliberate strides.

On the floor, Martha clutched her bruised ribs, her frail fingers trembling as she pressed a tissue against a cut near her cheekbone. The sight of her aunt in such a condition stirred a deep, protective fury within Elena, though her military discipline kept her outward demeanor entirely composed. She knew Marcus; she knew his history of financial manipulation and explosive outbursts. What she did not yet know was the catalyst that had driven him to raise a weapon against the woman who had practically raised them both after their parents passed away.

Marcus lowered his arms, sliding his hands slowly into the pockets of his dark trousers, a defiant smirk playing at the corners of his mouth. He thought himself untouchable, protected by legal loopholes and familial loyalty. But Elena had not spent fifteen years rising through the ranks of the United States Army by backing down from bullies. She pulled a secure radio from her belt, tapping the transmit button to request local law enforcement backup. The tactical reality of the situation was shifting rapidly from an intervention to a full criminal investigation, and Elena was determined to ensure justice prevailed, no matter the personal cost to their fractured family dynamic.
