Chapter 11: The Perimeter Breach

The interior of the farmhouse plunged into pitch darkness, save for the faint glow of the tablet screen lying face down on the wooden table. Elena grabbed her sidearm, moving with silent, fluid grace toward the front window. Peering through the dusty glass, she scanned the perimeter.

Two dark figures materialized out of the fog rolling in from the nearby woods, moving in a synchronized tactical wedge toward the farmhouse. They carried suppressed carbines and night-vision optics, sweeping the area with methodical precision. Apex had tracked them down. The digital signal from Elena’s encrypted tablet or the faint heat signature of the sedan’s engine must have given away their location.

“Aunt Martha, stay down behind the chair. Do not make a sound,” Elena whispered fiercely, pressing close to the wall beside the front door.

Martha nodded in the darkness, curling tightly into a ball, her breath coming in short, trembling gasps.

Elena’s heart rate remained steady, her military training overriding fear. She knew she could not engage two heavily armed professional mercenaries in a direct firefight inside an enclosed wooden structure; she had to use the environment to her advantage.

The heavy boots of the intruders crunched onto the wooden porch steps. A gloved hand tested the doorknob, finding it unlocked. The door swung open inward with a slow, agonizing squeak.

The first operative stepped across the threshold, his rifle raised and scanning the living room. Elena didn’t hesitate. Moving with blinding speed, she lunged forward, slamming the heavy oak door directly into the intruder’s weapon and knocking him off balance. Before the second operative could enter, Elena fired a single warning shot into the ceiling framing, splintering wood and showering debris down upon them.

“Drop your weapons! Federal military jurisdiction!” Elena shouted, projecting absolute authority despite the tactical disadvantage.

The first operative recovered quickly, swinging the barrel of his carbine toward her. Elena dropped low, sliding across the dusty floorboards and sweeping her leg to kick his boots out from under him. The man crashed heavily onto the floor, his rifle clattering away into the shadows.

The second operative outside raised his weapon, aiming directly through the open doorway toward Elena’s position.

Before he could pull the trigger, a blinding beam of light cut through the fog from the tree line, followed by the authoritative roar of a bullhorn.

“Drop your weapons! Federal agents! Do it now!”

A barrage of non-lethal flashbang grenades bounced across the porch, detonating with deafening concussive force and blinding flashes of white light. The Apex operative stumbled backward, dropping his weapon as federal tactical agents swarmed the porch, pinning him to the ground in a blur of motion.
