Chapter 9

Silas dropped the heavy wrench onto the concrete with a dull clatter, hurrying forward to unlock the chain-link gate with trembling fingers. He swung it wide, ushering Clara and Toby into the cluttered safety of the compound before quickly securing the heavy padlock behind them.

"Good lord, Clara," Silas rumbled, his voice like grinding stones as he looked down at Toby’s scratched face and the tiny bundle wrapped in the purple blanket. "Edward called me two nights ago sounding like a madman, rambling about encrypted drives and men chasing him through the pass. Then his phone went dead. I figured the worst, but seeing you here... come on inside, quick. Off the street."

He led them through the labyrinth of stacked tires and rusted engine blocks into the back of the massive garage, where a surprisingly neat and comfortable living space had been constructed out of a converted shipping container. The air smelled of fresh coffee and woodsmoke, a stark contrast to the oppressive heat and dust outside. Silas gently guided Toby to a comfortable armchair, immediately fetching a clean damp cloth and a bottle of antiseptic from a metal cabinet to tend to the boy's cuts.

"Drink this, son," Silas instructed kindly, handing Toby a mug of warm broth while gently dabbing at the angry red scratches on his cheek. Toby winced slightly but accepted the care with quiet gratitude.

Meanwhile, Clara sank onto a worn leather sofa, carefully unwrapping the purple blanket to reveal the baby, who was now stirring and crying softly from hunger. Silas moved to a small refrigerator in the corner, producing a small bottle of infant formula that he must have kept stocked for emergencies or passing travelers. He quickly warmed it on a hotplate, handing it to Clara with a sympathetic nod.

"She's a fighter, just like her father," Silas said softly, watching as Clara guided the nipple to the baby's eager mouth. The infant immediately began to feed ravenously, the tension finally draining from her tiny face.

Clara let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, feeling the immense weight of the past twenty-four hours settle heavily onto her shoulders. She looked up at the grizzled old mechanic, her eyes fierce and determined. "They're hunting us, Silas. The men who ran us off the road. They want Edward's research, and they won't stop until they have the locket."

Silas crossed his arms, his weather-beaten face darkening with grim resolve. "Edward trusted me with his life once, and I'll be damned if I let those corporate vipers touch his family. You're safe here for now, Clara. But we need to figure out our next move before they figure out where you fled."
