Chapter 13

The Jeep crested the summit of the mountain pass, emerging into a narrow clearing where the wind whipped fiercely through the towering pine trees. Silas immediately cut the engine, coasting silently into the dense shadow of an overhanging rock ledge to kill all momentum and sound. The sudden stillness was absolute, save for the whistling wind and the rhythmic ticking of the cooling exhaust pipe.
"They're ahead of us," Silas whispered tensely, peering through his binoculars down the winding descent of the western slope.
Clara cautiously peeked out from beneath the canvas tarp, her heart skipping a beat. Halfway down the narrow mountain road, blocking the only viable exit route off the ridge, sat two sleek, matte-black utility vehicles with their headlights extinguished. Armed figures clad in tactical tactical gear stood near the vehicles, scanning the tree line with thermal imaging binoculars.
"They anticipated our route over the pass," Clara said, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "They knew we'd head toward the valley."
Toby shivered beside her, his green eyes reflecting the distant glow of the tactical lights below. "Can we turn back, Silas?"
"The trail behind us is too narrow and steep; turning around would take too long, and they'd hear the engine echo off the canyon walls," Silas replied grimly, resting his hand on a heavy hunting rifle resting beside his seat. "We have to slip through the timber on foot. There's an old ranger lookout station about a mile down this ridge through the woods. If we can reach it, there’s an emergency radio line that bypasses commercial relays."
Clara looked down at the baby, who was sleeping peacefully, wrapped tightly in the purple blanket, entirely unaware of the lethal game of cat and mouse playing out around them. She looked at Toby, whose brave face couldn't entirely mask the exhaustion wracking his small body. The odds were impossibly stacked against them, but standing still meant certain capture.
"We do it," Clara said firmly, meeting Silas’s gaze with absolute resolve. "We walk."

Silas nodded, handing Clara a heavy tactical flashlight and checking his sidearm. "Stay close behind me, step where I step, and whatever you do, don't make a sound."
Quietly, they slipped out of the back of the Jeep. The forest floor was thick with pine needles, damp moss, and fallen branches, making every step a delicate exercise in balance and stealth. They melted into the towering shadows of the evergreens, leaving the idling Jeep behind as bait, and began their silent, perilous descent through the darkened timber toward the distant lookout station, knowing that a single snapped twig could spell the end of everything.
