Chapter 8

By early afternoon, the dirt road finally gave way to cracked asphalt, and the rusted, skeletal welcome sign of Oakhaven loomed ahead like a ghost from a forgotten era. Once a bustling logging community, the town had long since been hollowed out by economic decline and corporate buyouts, leaving behind a collection of boarded-up storefronts, peeling paint, and overgrown weeds. A heavy, suffocating silence hung over the main street, broken only by the mournful creak of an old metal sign swinging on a single hinge in the dry breeze.
Clara pulled Toby close, keeping to the deep shadows cast by the sagging wooden awnings of the abandoned buildings. They moved like shadows themselves, hyper-aware of their vulnerability in the open.
"Is this the place?" Toby whispered, his eyes wide as he gazed at the derelict buildings.
"Just a bit further down the lane," Clara replied quietly, her voice taut with nervous tension. "Silas's auto body shop is on the outskirts, right near the old lumber mill. He’s always been fiercely independent, which means he stays off the grid. If anyone in this county doesn't have a digital trail tying them to the modern surveillance grid, it’s him."
They navigated the deserted street with practiced caution, finally reaching a sprawling, corrugated metal compound enclosed by a tall chain-link fence topped with barbed wire. A weather-beaten sign reading Silas & Sons Automotive hung crookedly above the double gates, which were chained shut. Clara approached the pedestrian gate, peering through the rusted mesh into the cluttered yard filled with skeletal chassis of vintage trucks and towering stacks of spare tires.

"Silas!" Clara called out softly, rattling the chain against the metal post. "Silas, it's Clara! Edward's sister!"
For a long moment, the only response was the chatter of a startled blue jay taking flight from a nearby oak tree. Then, the heavy scrape of boots sounded from inside the dimly lit repair bay. A tall, heavily built elderly man with a shock of pure white hair and a grease-stained canvas jumpsuit stepped out into the blinding daylight. He squinted aggressively against the glare, holding a heavy wrench in one massive, calloused hand, his expression suspicious and defensive. As his eyes finally focused on Clara standing in the dust with a sleeping baby in her arms and a battered, red-haired boy clinging to her side, the harsh lines of his weathered face instantly softened into profound shock.
