Chapter 14

The hike through the dense timber was an agonizing exercise in stealth and endurance. Every muscle in Clara’s body burned as she carried the sleeping infant through the uneven terrain, her bare feet aching within her ruined shoes. Toby walked directly in front of her, guided by the faint outline of Silas’s moving figure ahead. The canopy of towering pines blocked out the moonlight, plunging the forest floor into a thick, inky darkness that required absolute concentration to navigate.

After what felt like a lifetime of silent marching, the skeletal silhouette of the old wooden ranger lookout tower finally loomed against the starry sky, perched precariously on a rocky promontory overlooking the vast western valley. Silas motioned for them to halt, sweeping the clearing with his tactical binoculars before signaling the all-clear.

They scrambled up the creaking wooden stairs of the tower, slipping inside the cramped, dusty observation room. Silas immediately set to work at an archaic radio console mounted in the corner—a heavy, analog transceiver powered by a hand-cranked generator and a dusty car battery.

"This is an emergency band tied directly to the federal wildlife and transit network," Silas whispered urgently as he threw a series of heavy brass toggle switches. "If anyone's still monitoring public infrastructure channels outside of corporate control, this will broadcast it wide across the state."

Clara settled Toby gently onto a wooden bench, letting the boy rest his weary head against her knee. She checked the baby, who stirred briefly before settling back into a peaceful sleep against her chest. The micro-SD card rested securely in her pocket, burning with the weight of the truth it carried.

"Do it, Silas," Clara urged softly.

Silas began turning the heavy metal crank of the generator while tapping out a repeating emergency distress signal in Morse code, followed by a compressed audio recording of Edward’s final whistle-blower statement that he had pre-loaded onto a handheld recorder. The analog signal crackled loudly through the static-filled speaker, broadcasting the undeniable proof of OmniCorp Bio’s illegal activities and the active manhunt across state lines straight to federal authorities and independent media outlets simultaneously.

Outside, the sharp crack of a distant twig echoed through the stillness of the mountain air. A bright beam of a tactical flashlight swept rapidly across the base of the lookout tower. They had been tracked. The tactical units had found their trail in the timber.

"They're downstairs," Silas muttered, drawing his sidearm and stepping toward the metal door with grim resolve. "Stay behind the console, Clara. I'll buy you the time you need."
