Chapter 6

The first pale streak of slate-gray light bled across the eastern horizon, cutting through the dusty windows of the maintenance shed and illuminating the silent figures within. Clara stirred from a light, agonizing slumber, her neck stiff and her muscles aching from hours of maintaining the same protective posture. Toby was still sleeping soundly beside her, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm, the scratches on his face looking slightly less inflamed in the cool morning light. The baby shifted peacefully in her purple cocoon, letting out a tiny yawn before settling back into a deep, restorative sleep.

Clara stood up slowly, wincing as her joints popped, and crept toward the cracked window to survey the surrounding landscape. The highway stretched out empty and desolate beneath a blanket of pale morning fog. Nothing moved except for a lonely vulture circling lazily far off in the distance. Yet, despite the apparent desolation, an uneasy prickle at the back of Clara’s neck warned her that time was running out. The longer they stayed in one place, the wider the net would cast.

She walked back to where Toby was beginning to stir, brushing a mop of red hair from his sleepy eyes. "Good morning, buddy," she whispered, offering a warm, reassuring smile that she didn't entirely feel. "How are you feeling today?"

Toby sat up, rubbing his eyes with the back of his scratched hand. He winced as his ribs twitched, but nodded bravely. "Better. My arm still hurts, but I can walk."

"Good, because we need to get moving before the sun gets too high," Clara said, handing him another sip of water. "There's a small town about ten miles down the old service road—Oakhaven. My mother used to have an old friend living out there, a retired mechanic named Silas. If anyone can help us ditch our digital footprint and find a secure vehicle, it's him."

Toby stood up, shaking out his stiff limbs and smoothing down his mud-stained green t-shirt. He looked down at the baby, who was now beginning to wake up with a soft, hungry whimper. "What about food for her? We don't have any formula."

Clara’s heart clenched at the practical reality of their situation. A newborn required sustenance, and they were entirely unprepared. "We'll find something in Oakhaven, Toby. We have to."

With quiet determination, Clara securely tucked the baby back into the purple blanket against her chest, ensuring the heavy silver locket was safely hidden beneath her yellow dress. She grabbed the claw hammer from the floor—their only weapon—and slipped it into the deep side pocket of her dress. Together, they slipped out the back door of the maintenance shed, leaving the dusty sanctuary behind and stepping out onto the empty service road, marching bravely toward an uncertain destination where old friends might prove to be their only salvation.
