Chapter 8: The Uninvited Guest

Julian froze mid-step, his hand hovering over the brass handle of the linen closet door. Beside him, Clara drew in a sharp breath, her fingers tightening reflexively into the fabric of her uniform. The distant chime of the security gate hung in the air, followed by the heavy, measured thud of footsteps echoing from the grand foyer downstairs.

"Who could that be at this hour?" Clara whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the grand staircase at the end of the hall. It was past eleven o'clock at night; no guests were expected, and Victoria’s security protocols were notoriously draconian about late-night visitors.

Julian’s mind raced through possibilities. Arthur Sterling? It wouldn't be the first time the patriarch made an unannounced midnight inspection to ensure his daughter’s household was running with military precision. Or perhaps it was someone from Victoria’s private circle—an associate from the inner sanctum of Sterling Global Holdings.

"Stay behind me, Clara," Julian instructed in a hushed, firm whisper. He shifted the baby carrier to one arm, slipping his free hand into his jacket pocket, searching for his phone. The screen remained dark; Victoria’s earlier threat about freezing his digital life flashed warningly in his mind, but he needed to see if the local network was still pinging.

Before he could pull the device free, the bathroom door of the master suite clicked open. Victoria emerged, having shed her wine glass. She had reapplied her lipstick, her blonde hair falling in immaculate waves over her one-shoulder white dress. She didn't look surprised by the noise downstairs; in fact, a faint, triumphant smirk played at the corners of her mouth.

"Ah," Victoria said smoothly, her voice carrying effortlessly down the empty corridor. "Just in time. You didn't really think I was managing this estate alone, did you, Julian?"

Julian turned slowly to face his wife, his jaw set in a hard line. "Who is downstairs, Victoria?"

Before she could answer, heavy, rhythmic footsteps began ascending the grand staircase. One set, then another. The distinctive click of polished leather soles marching with military precision up the carpeted steps.

"Family," Victoria replied, her eyes gleaming with cold satisfaction. "My father believes in proactive management. When an asset begins to fracture, you don't repair it. You replace it."

At the top of the stairs, two figures emerged from the shadows of the landing. They weren't police officers, and they weren't social workers. They wore sharp, slate-gray business suits, their expressions entirely devoid of emotion, moving with the practiced synchronization of private security detail contracted directly through Sterling Global Holdings. Between them walked a tall, silver-haired man with piercing blue eyes and a posture carved from granite—Arthur Sterling himself.

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The trap had just snapped shut.
