Chapter 13

The concrete utility corridor stretched out before them like an industrial labyrinth, illuminated only by intermittent, flickering overhead fluorescent tubes that buzzed with a low, hypnotic hum. Julian and Clara moved at a brisk, agonizing jog, the heavy metal baby carrier bouncing softly against Julian’s chest as Leo and Maya finally succumbed to sheer exhaustion, their cries fading into deep, rhythmic breathing.

"We’re approaching the main transformer junction," Julian whispered, scanning the numbered steel doors lining the corridor walls. "Through door forty-two is the auxiliary access tunnel. It leads directly beneath the security perimeter fence out to the secondary orchard road."

Clara stayed close to his shoulder, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her bare feet were aching against the rough concrete floor, but she didn't utter a single word of complaint. Her resilience in the face of the evening’s trauma was staggering.

"Mr. Cole," Clara whispered urgently, stopping dead in her tracks. "Listen."

From far back down the concrete corridor behind them came the distinct, heavy echo of shouting voices and the rapid, pounding stamp of combat boots hitting the floor. Arthur Sterling’s security team had bypassed the deadbolt much faster than Julian anticipated. They were closing the distance rapidly, and they wouldn't be playing by diplomatic rules out here in the sub-levels.

"They're right behind us," Julian said, his jaw tightening as he grabbed Clara by the arm and pulled her toward door forty-two.

Julian slammed his palm against the emergency release pad of the heavy steel door. The electronic lock flashed a harsh red light, accompanied by an irritating, high-pitched error beep. System locked. Biometric clearance required.

"Damn it!" Julian cursed under his breath. Victoria had remotely locked the subterranean zones from the master control unit upstairs. They were trapped in a dead-end corridor with a reinforced steel door and a pack of corporate enforcers closing in fast.

"Step aside, Mr. Cole," Clara said suddenly, her voice carrying a calm, chilling authority that made Julian pause.

Before Julian could react, Clara reached down, picked up a heavy iron wrench left behind on a maintenance cart by the utility wall, and swung it with absolute precision against the glass-encased manual release lever beside the keypad. The protective casing shattered with a loud, ringing crash. Clara jammed the wrench handle into the mechanical gear mechanism and hauled back with all her remaining strength.

With a loud groan of protesting metal, the pneumatic seal of door forty-two hissed open, revealing the cool night air and the dark, welcoming shadows of the orchard outside.
