Chapter 6: The Exit Strategy

The heavy silence of the master suite shattered under the weight of Julian’s ultimatum. Victoria stood motionless for a fraction of a second, her pale face flushing a faint, mottled pink before returning to its characteristic, chilling pallor. She did not raise her voice. Instead, she offered a slow, deliberate clap, her palms striking each other with dry, rhythmic precision.

"Bravado," Victoria whispered, her lips curling into a tight, humorless smile. "It suits you, darling, right up until the moment reality introduces itself. Go ahead. Walk out those doors. Take the nanny. Take the babies. But know this: the moment you cross that threshold, my father's legal team will freeze every corporate account, revoke your security clearances, and file an emergency injunction for parental abandonment and child endangerment. You won't even make it to the end of the driveway before your credit cards are declined."

Julian paused, the baby carrier balanced securely in his arms. He knew Victoria’s father, Arthur Sterling. The patriarch of Sterling Global Holdings was a man who viewed federal judges and district attorneys the way other men viewed golf buddies. The threat wasn't an empty bluff; it was an established protocol of the Sterling family playbook. They didn't negotiate; they obliterated opposition.

"You're threatening to destroy your own children's father just to win a domestic dispute?" Julian asked, his voice laced with absolute disgust.

Victoria tilted her head, her blonde hair sliding over her shoulder. "I am protecting my empire, Julian. You are a variable that has exceeded acceptable tolerance levels. Clara is merely collateral damage. If you choose to align yourself with collateral damage, you share its fate."

Clara pushed herself up from the bed, her legs visibly shaking beneath her blue and white uniform. She ignored the pain in her wrists, her focus entirely fixed on the infants.

"Mr. Cole... don't risk it for me," Clara said, her voice trembling as tears finally spilled over her bruised cheeks. "Please. Just take the babies and go. I’ll find a way out. I can handle her."

Julian looked at Clara, then down at Leo and Maya, who continued to sleep peacefully, entirely oblivious to the toxic storm raging around them. He realized Victoria was right about the immediate chessboard. If he charged out of the house half-cocked, Arthur Sterling’s legal apparatus would tear him apart before he could file a single police report. He needed a strategy, not a temper tantrum. He needed evidence, allies, and time.

"We aren't leaving yet, Victoria," Julian said, his voice dropping into a flat, controlled register. He turned and set the baby carrier back down on the plush armchair, deliberately placing it out of Victoria’s immediate reach. "Clara stays in the guest suite across the hall, unlocked and unmolested, for the rest of the night. Tomorrow morning, we are bringing in a family counselor and an independent mediator to review the household protocols."

Victoria stared at him for a long, agonizing moment, measuring his words, searching for a bluff. Finding only a grim, unyielding resolve, she slowly picked up her wine glass, took a final sip, and turned toward the en-suite bathroom.

"The guest suite is locked, Julian," Victoria called over her shoulder as the heavy glass door clicked shut behind her. "And I have the only key."
