Chapter 4: The Price of Compliance

Julian stood his ground, his jaw tightening as he stared down his wife. The air between them crackled with an unspoken war of wills. Victoria’s posture remained unyielding, her glass of Cabernet held steady against her collarbone, a crimson sentinel in a room gone gray with tension.
"I'm not leaving," Julian said quietly, his voice devoid of anger now, replaced by a cold, resolute firmness. "And neither are you until we resolve this professionally. Clara, I am going to untie you."
Before Victoria could react, Julian stepped around her, closing the distance to the bed with swift, purposeful strides. Victoria didn't lunge or scream; she merely watched him with a thin, mocking smile playing on her lips, as if amused by his futile display of chivalry.
Julian reached for the knot securing the coarse white cloth around Clara’s wrists. The fabric was tied with a sailor’s precision—double-looped and pulled taut. As his fingers brushed the damp cotton, Clara sucked in a sharp breath.
"Be careful, Mr. Cole," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "She tied it... she said if I moved, it would pull tighter around the baby carrier."
Julian paused, his fingers frozen on the knot. He looked down and realized with a sickening jolt of horror that the white cloth wasn't just binding Clara’s wrists; it was woven through the heavy plastic handle of the infant carrier, anchoring the babies directly to her body. To untie her hands quickly without disturbing the carrier required two free hands and absolute precision.
"I see it," Julian muttered, his heart hammering against his ribs. He began to work the knot methodically, his fingernails working at the stubborn fibers.
Victoria took a slow sip of her wine, her voice drifting across the room like a cold breeze. "You're making a mess of things, Julian. Clara agreed to these terms when she signed the supplemental employment rider. It's all legal. Well, as legal as things need to be when protecting an estate from internal negligence."
Julian didn't look up. "Supplemental employment rider? Victoria, you can't contractually bind someone to a bed with a baby carrier. That’s kidnapping, coercion, and assault rolled into a neat little package of criminal liability."
"Liability is a construct for the poor," Victoria replied, her voice smooth and unbothered. "In our tax bracket, it’s all about risk mitigation. Clara thought she could slip past my security protocols and establish an independent alliance with you. She thought she could bypass the mistress of the house by appealing to the master's bleeding heart. Classic nanny playbooks. I cut the script short."

With a sharp pull, the stubborn knot finally gave way. The coarse white cloth fell slack around Clara’s bruised wrists. Julian immediately reached out, supporting the weight of the infant carrier before it could shift and startle the sleeping twins. He lifted the carrier gently off Clara’s lap, setting it down securely on the plush armchair beside the bed. Leo and Maya stirred faintly, letting out soft, fluttering sighs, but neither woke.
Clara slumped back against the headboard, rubbing her raw, aching wrists. Her chest heaved with ragged breaths as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system, leaving her trembling and pale.
