Chapter 8

As the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Clara and Lily, an oppressive silence settled back over the grand ballroom. The crystal chandelier hummed softly overhead, casting cold reflections across the scattered papers that littered the marble floor. Victoria remained motionless, her designer gray suit feeling less like professional armor and more like a straitjacket. Richard slumped against a mahogany pillar, his head buried in his hands as the full magnitude of his professional and personal destruction crashed down upon him. The ambition that had driven them both into this hollow partnership had burned out, leaving nothing behind but ash and regret. Victoria slowly raised her head, looking at the man she had manipulated into joining her crusade. He was no longer the confident, rising executive she had targeted six months ago; he was a broken man whose superficial charm had evaporated the moment real consequences arrived.
“We’re finished,” Victoria whispered, her voice devoid of its usual sharp edge. It wasn't a question or a threat; it was a simple, undeniable acceptance of reality. Richard didn't look up from his hands. His voice came out muffled and choked with bitter anger. “You ruined everything, Victoria. I had a stable life, a family, a future. And you lured me in with promises of an empire that was built on stolen sand.” Victoria let out a humorless smile, her eyes fixed on the empty doorway where Clara and Lily had just departed. “An empire? No, Richard. We built a prison. We just furnished it nicely.” She walked slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the glittering city skyline below. The distant lights of skyscrapers twinkled like stars, beautiful from a distance, but cold and indifferent up close. She pressed her palm against the cool glass, realizing that for all her cleverness, she was entirely alone.
Down on the street below, a sleek black car pulled away from the grand entrance, carrying Clara, Lily, and Julian away from the wreckage toward a quiet, peaceful future. Victoria watched the taillights fade into the night traffic, feeling a profound emptiness settle into her chest. The federal marshals would arrive within the hour; her assets were already frozen, and her former associates were undoubtedly rushing to distance themselves from her impending indictment. There were no more lies left to tell, no more aliases to hide behind, and no more clever maneuvers to execute. Allison Vance had finally run out of road. She turned away from the window, looking at Richard one last time before sitting down on the edge of a velvet chair, waiting quietly for the inevitable knock on the door that would mark the official end of her stolen life.
