Chapter 2

The name Ally hung heavily in the air, a phantom from a time Victoria had worked tirelessly to erase. Fourteen years ago, before the designer gray suits, the pearl earrings, and the corner office at Sterling Holdings, there was Allison Vance—a desperate young woman who had walked away from everything, leaving behind a trail of debts and a shattered family. Victoria stared at Clara, whose tear-stained face had hardened into an expression of unyielding resolve. Clara tapped the screen of her phone, keeping the speaker active. The man on the line did not speak again immediately, allowing the heavy, suffocating silence to stretch between them. Victoria took an involuntary step backward, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. She realized with a sickening lurch in her stomach that Clara had not stumbled into this ballroom by accident. The public humiliation engineered to destroy Clara's marriage was actually a meticulously baited trap, and Victoria had walked straight into the center of it.

Lily shifted in her mother's arms, her small hands clutching the fabric of Clara’s light blue silk dress. The child’s tears had stopped, replaced by a confused curiosity as she looked between the two adults. Clara knelt gracefully, setting Lily down on the floor while keeping her eyes fixed on Victoria. “You thought you could destroy my life just to secure your merger, Victoria?” Clara’s voice was remarkably steady, devoid of the earlier panic. “You thought Richard was just another wealthy mark to manipulate. But you forgot to check who he really answers to.” Victoria’s mind raced, trying to calculate an escape route, but the heavy oak doors of the ballroom were closed, guarded by discretion and wealth. She forced her chin up, relying on decades of practiced arrogance to mask the cold terror gripping her chest. “I have no idea what you are rambling about,” Victoria lied, though her voice lacked its usual sharp authority. “Some random man calls my old name, and you expect me to cower?”

Clara didn't raise her voice; she merely smiled, a chilling echo of Victoria’s own smug expression from minutes before. She reached into her clutch once more and pulled out a thick manila folder, sliding it across the marble surface toward Victoria’s feet. The heavy paper stopped right against the toe of Victoria’s designer pump. Inside that folder lay the truth—not just about Richard’s so-called betrayal, but about the illegal financial maneuvers Victoria had used to climb to the top of the corporate ladder, funded by the very debts Allison Vance had abandoned a decade and a half ago. Victoria looked down at the folder, her breath catching in her throat. The game was over, and the reckoning had arrived.
