Chapter 4

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom creaked open, breaking the tense silence that had settled between the two women. Footsteps echoed from the grand marble foyer, steady and unhurried. Victoria turned her head sharply, expecting security, or perhaps the hotel manager coming to intervene. Instead, a tall man in a tailored charcoal suit stepped into the light. His face was sharp, featuring familiar eyes that mirrored Clara’s fierce intelligence. It was Julian Vance—the ghost from Victoria’s past, and the very man whose voice had just crackled through the phone speaker calling her Ally. Julian stopped a few paces away, his gaze fixed entirely on Victoria. The smug woman in the gray suit shrank back mentally, the realization of her total defeat sinking deep into her bones. Fourteen years ago, she had left Julian penniless and disgraced, taking the fall for her corporate crimes. Now, he stood before her completely vindicated, holding all the cards.
Julian didn't shout or rush forward with vengeance in his eyes. His calm demeanor was far more terrifying than any outburst could have been. He adjusted his cuffs, his gaze ice-cold. “Hello, Ally. It’s been a long time,” Julian said, his voice smooth and measured. Victoria’s lips parted, but no words came out. The sophisticated businesswoman had entirely vanished, replaced by a woman trapped by her own past sins. Clara walked over to her brother, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him, a united front that radiated undeniable power. Little Lily ran ahead, rushing toward Julian with a bright smile. “Uncle Jules!” she cheered, throwing her arms around his waist. Julian instantly knelt, scooping the little girl up into his arms and kissing the top of her head, completely ignoring Victoria as if she were nothing more than a piece of discarded furniture.
Victoria swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly as she finally forced the words out. “What do you want? Money? Silence? Name your price. I can wire whatever you need before the night is over.” Julian looked over Lily’s shoulder, his eyes narrowing as he regarded Victoria with profound disappointment. “You still think everything can be bought, don't you?” Julian replied quietly. “You think a few million dollars can erase the ruined careers, the false accusations, and the years my family spent picking up the pieces while you lived in luxury.” Clara stepped in, holding up the manila folder. “This isn't about extortion, Victoria. This is about justice. The board of Sterling Holdings has already received the preliminary audit. By the time the clock strikes midnight, your accounts will be frozen, and the authorities will have your formal indictment.” Victoria’s legs felt weak, and she instinctively reached out to steady herself against the nearest mahogany table, the crystal chandelier overhead spinning slightly in her blurred vision.
