Chapter 3

Victoria stared down at the manila folder resting against her shoe, the stark white label bearing initials she hadn't seen in fifteen years. The veneer of untouchable corporate success was cracking, revealing the hollow, desperate woman underneath. She refused to bend down to pick it up, maintaining a rigid posture despite the cold sweat beading at the back of her neck. Clara stood tall beside little Lily, who was quietly tracing the sparkling patterns of her tiara with a small finger. The ballroom around them remained eerily still, the crystal chandelier casting dancing refractions of light that felt less like celebration and more like an interrogation under harsh spotlights. “You don't have to touch it right now, Victoria,” Clara said softly, her tone carrying a quiet authority that commanded the room. “We have plenty of time. After all, the guests won't arrive for another half hour, and Richard is busy tying up loose ends upstairs.”

At the mention of her husband, Victoria’s eyes snapped up to meet Clara’s. The shock in Victoria's gaze was rapidly giving way to a dangerous, cornered desperation. “Richard doesn't know anything about who I used to be,” Victoria hissed, dropping her professional composure entirely. “I built this life from nothing. I earned every single title, every single share. You think a folder of old paper and a phone call from a ghost can erase a decade of hard work?” Clara stepped closer, her diamond necklace catching the overhead light as she moved. She wasn't angry anymore; her demeanor was surgical, precise, and entirely devoid of fear. “Hard work, Victoria? Or embezzlement, blackmail, and systematic corporate sabotage?” Clara countered, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “You ruined my brother’s life five years ago under a different alias. You thought he was just another stepping stone. But family loyalty runs deeper than your offshore accounts.”

Victoria’s breath hitched. The pieces clicked into a horrifying mosaic in her mind. Clara wasn't just a random socialite whose husband had strayed into Victoria’s web; Clara was the sister of Julian Vance—a man Victoria had systematically framed for financial fraud to secure her first major promotion. The affair with Richard was never real; it was a carefully orchestrated sting operation designed to lure Victoria out of her high-rise fortress and into a public space where she had nowhere left to hide. Lily looked up at her mother, tugging gently on the silk hem of her dress. “Mommy, are we done here? Can we go find daddy now?” Clara looked down at her daughter, her stern expression softening instantly into warmth. She stroked the little girl’s brown hair gently. “Almost, sweetie. Just a few more minutes.” Victoria stood paralyzed, realizing that her empire of lies was crumbling into dust.
