Chapter 5

The reality of her impending ruin washed over Victoria in cold, relentless waves. The high-rise corner offices, the expensive designer suits, the polished social status—all of it was slipping through her fingers like dry sand. She looked at Julian, then at Clara, searching for a single crack of mercy in their expressions, but found only absolute resolve. “You can't do this,” Victoria whispered, her voice cracking with desperation. “The scandal will destroy the company, the investors, everyone connected to it.” Julian gently set Lily down, whispering something to the little girl before she skipped off toward the corner of the grand room to play quietly with a discarded ribbon. Julian stood up, towering over Victoria as he stepped closer. “We aren't destroying the company, Ally. We are cleansing it. You built your entire throne on stolen foundations, and every single brick you laid was built on a lie.”

Clara opened the manila folder, letting a cascade of printed bank statements, encrypted email transcripts, and legal affidavits spill across the marble floor. The documents fluttered down like autumn leaves, landing in a chaotic heap around Victoria’s designer shoes. Victoria looked down at the physical proof of her crimes, each page detailing a different betrayal, a different shortcut, a different innocent person she had crushed to get ahead. The meticulous paper trail she thought she had permanently erased had been painstakingly reconstructed over five long years. “How did you find all of this?” Victoria asked, her voice barely a breath. Clara knelt gracefully to pick up a single sheet of paper, holding it up to the light. “You were smart, Ally, but you were arrogant. You used the same offshore routing codes you set up when we were first starting out. You thought nobody would ever look back that far.”

Victoria realized the fatal flaw in her otherwise brilliant ascent: she had believed her past was dead and buried, failing to recognize that unresolved trauma and unpunished crimes always leave a trail. Her mind raced, desperately searching for a legal loophole, a corporate ally, or a way to spin the narrative before the board meeting tomorrow morning. But the silence in the room offered no comfort. Julian pulled out his own smartphone, tapping the screen once. A soft chime echoed from Victoria’s designer handbag, signaling a newly arrived notification. With trembling fingers, Victoria reached into her bag and pulled out her phone. The screen displayed an emergency broadcast from Sterling Holdings' internal network: an all-hands audit notification sent directly to every major shareholder, freezing all executive assets effective immediately. Victoria stared at the screen, her vision blurring as the final pillar of her fabricated life came crashing down around her in total silence.
