Chapter 8: The Legal Reckoning

The day of the final court hearing arrived with a heavy grey fog hanging over the county courthouse. Sarah wore a simple charcoal suit, her hair pulled back neatly. Alongside her legal advocate, she walked into the marble courtroom, her heart steady and her head held high.

Marcus sat at the defense table in an orange inmate jumpsuit, flanked by his legal team. When Sarah walked past, he glared at her, his eyes cold and full of the familiar rage he had used to rule their home for years.

In the past, that look would have forced Sarah to drop her gaze in submissive fear. Today, she looked directly back at him. She saw no giant, no master—only an angry, broken man whose illusion of power had completely vanished.

When Sarah took the witness stand, her voice did not shake. She presented the timeline, the forensic evidence, and the medical reports clearly and calmly. ""I stayed because I was afraid,"" she told the judge, looking straight into the eyes of the court. ""I left because I loved my daughter more than I feared his anger.""
