Chapter 13: Paper Butterflies

One afternoon while cleaning out her old leather shoulder bag, Sarah found the small folded piece of paper she had carried on the terrible day she left Marcus. It was the original court summons—the paper that had sparked the violent confrontation in her kitchen months ago.

She looked at the document. Once, it had represented terror, violence, and the terrifying unknown. Now, it was just a piece of old, lifeless paper.

She called Lily into the kitchen. Together, they sat at the wooden table with safety scissors, watercolors, and bright paintbrushes. They painted the legal document with brilliant shades of bright turquoise, fiery orange, and deep lavender. When the paint dried, Sarah showed Lily how to fold the paper into origami butterflies.

They took the paper butterflies out into the garden and hung them from the branches of the apple tree with thin silver strings. As the warm coastal breeze blew through the garden, the colorful butterflies danced gently in the sunlight. What had once been a symbol of pain was now art.
