The Haven shelter stood at the end of a quiet, tree-lined street on the outskirts of the city. It looked like an ordinary Victorian house with a wrap-around porch and yellow light spilling warm from every window. As the shelter director, a warm woman named Clara, unlocked the front door, the scent of lavender and freshly baked bread greeted them.
""Welcome,"" Clara said gently, taking their single overnight bag. ""Here, nobody asks you questions you don't want to answer. You rest.""
