Chapter 7: The Exit Strategy

Officer Miller led Richard out through the grand double doors, the metal cuffs clinking rhythmically with every step. The flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers painted the marble pillared portico outside in a frantic, urgent rhythm. A small cluster of late-night paparazzi, tipped off by an anonymous source within the firm's IT department, began flashing cameras frantically as Richard was shoved into the back of an unmarked van. The Sterling empire was officially a smoking ruin.
Inside the ballroom, the remaining guests began to scatter like frightened mice, eager to distance themselves from the scandal before their own names appeared on the financial ledger projection screen. Julian stood up slowly, letting the heavy oak chair fall backward onto the tiled floor. He walked over to the gift table, picked up his discarded tuxedo jacket, and draped it over his arm. He looked at Clara and Jax, who were pausing near the exit, waiting for Officer Miller to clear their path through the swarm of reporters outside.
"What happens now?" Julian asked, his voice cracking slightly. He looked at Lily, feeling a sudden, agonizing wave of responsibility for the cruelty she had suffered under his father’s roof. Clara turned back, her expression softening as she saw the genuine remorse etched into the young man’s face. "Now, Julian, we pick up the pieces. Your father’s assets are frozen, the victims are going to get their pensions back, and Lily is going to get a hot meal and a safe place to sleep."

Jax looked over his shoulder at Julian, his dark eyes assessing the young man with a critical, unblinking stare. "You want to make things right, kid? Use that law degree your daddy bought you to help the people he screwed over, instead of defending the shell companies that hid the cash. That’s the only way you wash the Sterling name clean." Jax didn't wait for a response; he turned and pushed open the heavy door, leading Lily out into the cool, star-lit night.
Clara lingered for a moment, resting a hand gently on Julian’s shoulder. "He’s a good kid, Julian. Don't let your father’s sins define the man you choose to become tomorrow." With those parting words, Clara followed Jax and Lily into the humid Philadelphia night, leaving the golden heir of the Sterling dynasty standing alone amidst the wreckage of his shattered wedding day.
