Chapter 2: The Digital Ledger

Officer Miller slammed the laptop down onto the mahogany gift table, the heavy thud rattling the silver champagne flutes. "Step away from the table, Mr. Sterling," Miller ordered, his hand resting casually on the black holster at his hip. The guests began to shift uneasily, designer heels clicking against the marble as people tried to edge toward the exits, only to find two more uniformed deputies blocking the terrace doors. Richard tried to regain his composure, adjusting his bow tie with a hand that shook violently. "This is an outrage," Richard stammered, his voice lacking its previous venom. "I am a major donor to the police benevolent fund. You have no rightβ"
"Shut your mouth, Richard," a deep, gravelly voice echoed from the rear of the ballroom. The crowd parted instantly, creating a wide berth as a tall, imposing figure stepped forward out of the shadows. Jax wore a battered black leather vest over a faded denim shirt, his long dark hair tied back in a messy knot, and his arms covered in intricate, faded tattoos that told a story of a very different life. Jax didn't look like a wedding guest; he looked like an executioner. He walked with a slight limp, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Richard Sterling.

Lily gasped softly, peeking out from behind Claraβs champagne dress. She reached into the pocket of her oversized hand-me-down jacket and clutched a small, folded piece of paper. Jax stopped five feet from the dais, ignoring the scandalized whispers of the wealthy patrons. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a worn, faded photograph, holding it up so the sharp ballroom lights caught the image of a much younger, harder-faced biker holding a laughing infant wrapped in a blue blanket.
"You dropped more than just your phone tonight, Richard," Jax said, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. Officer Miller tapped the trackpad of the laptop, and a massive projection screen behind the head table flickered to life. Instead of the romantic montage of Julian and his new bride, the screen displayed a live-streamed forensic data dump. Column after column of financial transactions, offshore account routing numbers, and encrypted text messages began to scroll upward at a blinding speed. Julian staggered backward, his eyes widening in horror as he recognized the company logos flashing across the board. It was his fatherβs firm, and the money wasn't just missingβit had been systematically stolen from the pension funds of thousands of working-class families.
