Chapter 3: Shadows of the Past

The ballroom erupted into chaotic noise. Wealthy executives shouted over one another, reaching frantically for their smartphones, only to discover their signal jammers had locked every device in the room. Julian stared at the glowing screen, his voice cracking as he whispered, "Dad... what is this?" Richard lunged forward, trying to slam the laptop shut, but Officer Miller intercepted him with a swift, practiced arm-bar, pinning the older man’s wrists behind his back with a sharp click of steel handcuffs.

Clara stepped out from the dais, keeping Lily shielded behind her skirt. She looked at Jax, her expression softening from fierce defiance to a deep, sorrowful recognition. "You kept your promise," Clara said quietly. Jax nodded once, his rugged face expressionless, though his jaw muscles twitched. "A debt’s a debt, Clara. And it’s time to settle up," Jax replied, stepping closer to the edge of the stage. He knelt down on one knee, ignoring the dirt he was tracking onto the pristine white tiles, until he was eye-level with eight-year-old Lily.

Lily looked down at the tattooed giant, her big hazel eyes filled with a mixture of fear and profound hope. Slowly, she opened her palm and revealed the small, folded paper she had been gripping so tightly. Jax gently took the paper from her small, trembling fingers. He unfolded it with surprising care, revealing a child’s crayon drawing of a motorcycle and a little girl holding hands under a bright yellow sun. A heavy, suffocating silence seemed to envelop the immediate area around them, cutting through the background noise of panicking socialites.

"You dropped this when that bastard grabbed you," Jax murmured, his tough exterior cracking just enough to reveal the deep well of pain beneath. "You shouldn't have been anywhere near this snake pit, kid." Clara placed a comforting hand on Jax’s broad shoulder. "She wanted to give it to him, Jax. She wanted to prove she wasn't a thief." Richard strained against the handcuffs, his face turning a dangerous shade of purple as he screamed insults, but Officer Miller pressed a thick forearm against Richard’s neck, cutting off the tirade with practiced efficiency.
