Chapter 9: The Hospital Corridor

The waiting room of the county medical center smelled sharply of antiseptic and damp winter coats. It was past midnight, and the usual bustle of the emergency department had slowed to a steady, muted rhythm. David sat on a hard plastic chair with Lily resting her head in his lap. The little girl had drifted into an exhausted sleep, her breathing slow and even. A kind-faced triage nurse named Carla had quickly fast-tracked them past the crowded general lobby once David mentioned the nature of the injury and presented the digital evidence on his phone.
Ten minutes later, a young resident physician named Dr. Evans entered the examination room, holding a clipboard. He looked at David with a sober, professional expression, then glanced gently at Lily.
""Mr. Miller, I’ve reviewed the intake notes and the initial photographic logs you showed the nurse,"" Dr. Evans said quietly, pulling up a rolling stool. ""We need to perform a thorough physical examination of her back and lower spine. I also need to ask you a few direct questions about how this injury occurred.""
David nodded, his throat tight. ""I understand. Do whatever is necessary.""
Dr. Evans gently woke Lily, speaking to her in a soft, soothing tone so as not to frighten her. The examination was thorough and professional. When the doctor lifted the white ruffled dress to examine the circular bruise on her lower back, Lily winced slightly, and David had to look away, gripping the edge of the examination table until his knuckles turned white.
After completing the physical check, Dr. Evans stepped out into the hallway with David to discuss the findings away from the child.
""The contusion is consistent with a blunt impact delivered with considerable force,"" Dr. Evans stated clearly. ""There is localized deep tissue inflammation, but fortunately, no spinal fractures or severe internal organ damage. However, given the nature of the mark, hospital protocol requires us to notify the county child protective services unit immediately. A social worker will be assigned to interview both you and the child tomorrow morning.""

""I expected that,"" David replied without hesitation. ""I want it reported. I have video evidence from our home security system documenting the incident and prior altercations.""
Dr. Evans looked surprised by David’s proactive cooperation, a rarity in cases involving domestic trauma. ""That will expedite the investigation significantly, Mr. Miller. You're doing the right thing. Stay here in the observation room; a social worker will be in touch by eight o'clock.""
