Chapter 12: The Grandmother's Testimony

Back at the hospital suite, David and Lily were paid an unexpected visitor late that afternoon. Helen walked in, looking tired and subdued, still wearing a neutral-toned coat over her clothes. She didn't look like the woman hiding in the background anymore; she looked like a grandmother determined to do the right thing before it was too late.

Lily looked up from the coloring book Elena Vance had provided, her face lighting up slightly. ""Grandma.""

Helen knelt beside the small table, taking Lily’s small hands in her own. ""Hello, my sweet girl. I am so, so sorry for everything.""

David stood by the window, watching the interaction with guarded caution. ""How did you get here, Helen?""

""I took a cab,"" Helen answered, looking up at David with weary eyes. ""Sarah is furious. She spent the last two hours screaming at her lawyers over the phone before locking herself in her room. But I didn't come here to talk about her. I came to give you this.""

Helen reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, heavy-duty flash drive, placing it on the table next to David's smartphone.

""What is this?"" David asked, eyeing the device.

""It’s a backup archive of Sarah’s personal journal entries and digital communications from the past two years,"" Helen said quietly, her voice steady despite her trembling hands. ""She kept a detailed digital log of her episodes—not just with Lily, but previous incidents of explosive rage that she managed to hide from everyone outside this house. I found it stored on her home office computer last night after you left.""

David stared at the flash drive, understanding the immense courage it took for Helen to betray her own daughter’s secrets. ""You realize what this means, Helen? This isn't just about custody anymore. This is going to be used in criminal proceedings.""

""I know,"" Helen whispered, a tear finally escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek. ""I covered for her because I loved her and wanted to protect our family’s reputation. But protecting a broken person by letting them hurt a child isn't love—it's cowardice. I won't be a coward anymore, David. Use whatever you need to keep Lily safe.""
