Chapter 11: The Subpoena

While David and Lily remained in the safety of the family support suite, the legal machinery of the county court system moved with unexpected speed. By noon, a sheriff’s deputy had arrived at the suburban residence to serve Sarah Miller with an emergency protection order and a notice of mandatory court appearance.
Inside the quiet house, Sarah stared at the legal documents spread across the kitchen island. Her blond hair was uncombed, and the empty wine glass sat discarded in the sink. The realization that David had actually followed through—that he had bypassed her threats and gone straight to child welfare and the courts—sent a surge of blind panic through her system. She picked up her phone, dialing her attorney's number with trembling fingers.
""Hello, this is Sarah Miller,"" she snapped the moment the call connected. ""My husband has filed some ridiculous emergency custody order based on lies. I need you to file an immediate injunction to stop this.""
On the other end of the line, her attorney’s voice was cautious and measured. ""Mrs. Miller, calm down. I’ve just received copies of the preliminary filings from the county prosecutor’s office. They have video footage and a medical report documenting physical trauma to a minor. This isn't a routine custody dispute anymore. If the state’s evidence holds up in front of Judge Hawthorne tomorrow morning, you are facing serious criminal charges, not just civil restrictions.""
""The footage is fabricated! It was taken out of context!"" Sarah shrieked, slamming her hand against the marble countertop.

""That is not an argument you want to make in front of Hawthorne without expert forensic analysis,"" the attorney warned sharply. ""Listen to me very carefully, Sarah. Do not attempt to contact David or the child. Do not go to the hospital. If you violate this protection order by even a fraction of an inch, I will drop you as a client.""
The line went dead with a sharp click. Sarah stood in the empty kitchen, the silence of the house pressing down on her from all sides. For the first time in her life, her wealth, her charm, and her fierce temper were utterly useless. She looked toward the hallway where the incident had occurred just twenty-four hours earlier, realizing that the castle of perfection she had built was crumbling into dust.
