Chapter 6: Confrontation in the Corridor

Sarah blocked the narrow hallway, her arms crossed over her chest, the empty wine glass resting on the console table behind her. Her eyes were hard, devoid of any warmth or remorse.

""Who were you on the phone with, David?"" she asked, her voice dangerously low.

David didn't flinch. He took a step forward, towering over her by several inches, yet sensing that the physical height difference meant nothing against her volatile unpredictability. ""I was talking to a doctor, Sarah. A pediatrician. I described Lily’s back.""

A flicker of genuine panic crossed Sarah’s features before she replaced it with a sneer of contempt. ""You're calling doctors behind my back? You're going to drag our family name through the mud over a simple accident?""

""It wasn't an accident,"" David said, his voice steady, carrying a quiet authority that caught her off guard. ""I have the footage, Sarah. I downloaded the security exports from the hallway cameras. I watched you shove her against the wall three days ago. I watched what you did.""

The color drained slightly from Sarah’s face, leaving her pale beneath her blond waves. For a second, she looked cornered, but the panic quickly mutated back into fierce defiance. She lunged forward, grabbing the lapel of David’s white button-down shirt with surprising strength.

""You didn't save anything,"" she hissed, her face inches from his. ""If you try to use any digital files against me, I will destroy you, David. Do you hear me? I’ll tell the police, the courts, everyone, that you were the one losing control. I’ll claim the abuse was coming from you. Who do you think a judge is going to believe—a successful corporate executive or a crumbling husband who spends his nights spying on his own family?""

Before David could respond, Helen stepped out of her bedroom further down the hall, her pink bathrobe swaying as she hurried toward them.

""Sarah, stop it! Both of you stop this madness!"" Helen cried, interposing herself between her daughter and her son-in-law. She turned to Sarah, her voice trembling. ""You cannot threaten him with lies. I have kept your secrets for too long. If you touch him, or if you try to turn this around on David, I will tell the authorities everything I’ve witnessed over the last year.""

Sarah stared at her mother in utter disbelief, her grip on David’s shirt loosening. The fragile alliance within the household had completely shattered. There was no going back to polite dinners and quiet evenings.
