Chapter 10: Dawn at the Shelter

By dawn, the hospital had transferred David and Lily to a private family support suite while they awaited the arrival of the county social worker. The room was modest, featuring two twin beds, a small table, and a window overlooking the gray, misty hospital parking lot. Lily was awake now, nibbling quietly on a piece of toast provided by the nursing staff, still wearing her white ruffled dress because they had brought no other clothes.

At precisely eight o'clock, a knock sounded on the door. A woman in her late forties with sharp, intelligent eyes and a warm, compassionate demeanor entered the room. Her name badge read *Elena Vance, Child Welfare Services*.

""Good morning, Mr. Miller. Lily,"" Elena said, stepping inside and closing the door softly behind her. She didn't carry a clipboard like a hostile bureaucrat; instead, she held a small leather portfolio and sat down in a chair near the window, making sure not to tower over the little girl.

""Thank you for coming so quickly, Ms. Vance,"" David said, standing up from the edge of the bed. He reached into his pocket and placed his smartphone on the small table, unlocking the secure folder containing the video exports and his typewritten timeline. ""I have everything documented here. Security footage, dates, and medical records from the doctor on duty last night.""

Elena looked at the phone, then up at David. ""Most parents in your position try to minimize or hide what happened, Mr. Miller. The fact that you brought her here and preserved the evidence tells me a great deal about where your priorities lie.""

She turned her attention to Lily, speaking in a gentle, conversational tone. ""Lily, can you tell me a little bit about what happened yesterday?""

Lily looked down at her toast for a moment, then glanced at her father. Seeing David’s encouraging, supportive nod, she spoke softly. ""Mommy was mad. She pushed me against the wall because I spilled my cup.""

The simplicity of the child's statement carried a devastating weight. Elena didn't press her for further details, knowing the trauma was fresh. She turned back to David. ""Based on the medical report, the child’s statement, and the digital footage you’ve provided, we will be issuing an immediate emergency protective custody order restricting Sarah Miller from contacting or approaching either of you.""

David felt a profound wave of relief wash over him, mixed with a lingering dread regarding how Sarah would retaliate when she was served with the papers.
