Chapter 8: The Hard Truth

Arthur’s dismissive wave of his hand hovered over the coffee table, but the confident smirk on his face was beginning to falter as he noticed the absolute stillness in both David and Elena. They weren't defensive; they weren't arguing back with equal volume. They were simply presenting facts to a man who had made a lifelong career out of ignoring them.

Slowly, almost reluctantly, Arthur lowered his gaze to the papers resting on the wood surface. He picked up the printed still frame from the security monitor, studying the grayscale image where Chloe’s face, captured under the harsh security light, was unmistakably clear. He turned the page to the itemized repair bill, his eyes scanning the staggering total required to replace the specialized black pool liner. The math didn't lie, and the physical evidence was impossible to explain away as a harmless misunderstanding.

"She... she was just angry," Arthur muttered defensively, though the booming resonance had completely vanished from his voice, replaced by a defensive, hollow whisper. "You guys cut her off financially. She didn't know what she was doing. She's impulsive."

David stepped closer to his brother, his expression hardened by years of watching Arthur clean up Chloe's messes with cash while avoiding any actual parenting. "She is twenty-four years old, Arthur. She isn't a child. For three months, we housed her, fed her, and tried to help her find stability. In return, she stole minor valuables, disrespected our home, and then committed thousands of dollars worth of deliberate property damage when we finally enforced a boundary."

Arthur looked up, his face flushing with a mixture of embarrassment and lingering stubbornness. "You're pressing charges? Against your own niece?"

"The legal process has already been set in motion," Elena stated calmly, leaving no room for negotiation. "Marcus Vance filed the paperwork this morning. At this point, it's out of our hands and in the hands of the district attorney. If you want to help Chloe, Arthur, you should stop paying her bail and start paying for a very good criminal defense attorney, because the grayscale footage and the contractor's affidavit make an airtight case."

Arthur stood there for a long moment, the reality of the situation finally sinking into his thick skull. He realized that his usual intimidation tactics wouldn't work on people who had reached the absolute end of their patience. Without another word, he dropped the papers back onto the table, turned around, and walked out of the house, slamming the front door behind him with a dull, echoing thud.

Elena let out a long breath, sinking back onto the sofa. "Well, that takes care of the flying monkeys."
