Chapter 6: The Bluff Called

The sudden drop in temperature seemed palpable on the porch as Chloe processed the undeniable proof flashing on Elena's phone screen. For a fleeting moment, the defiant facade cracked, revealing the panicked desperation of a twenty-something amateur criminal who had severely miscalculated the consequences of her spiteful actions. But Chloe was too proud, and perhaps too accustomed to escaping accountability through manipulation, to surrender easily.

"You're bluffing," Chloe spat out, crossing her arms defensively across the chest of her dark red jacket. Her voice hitched slightly, betraying the lie she was desperately trying to sell. "Nobody calls the cops on their own blood over a few scratches in some plastic. You're just trying to scare me into backing down because you're cheap."

David stepped one inch closer, towering over her with a restrained intensity that made Chloe take an involuntary half-step backward off the porch step. "You don't know the first thing about being family, Chloe. You took our hospitality, you stole minor items from the guest house over the last month, and when we finally told you that you had to find your own place and your own job, you decided to vandalize our property out of pure, childish malice."

Elena didn't raise her voice, but every word she spoke carried the chilling weight of finality. "Marcus Vance is already drafting the paperwork. The police detective handling property crimes in this district has a direct copy of the files. You have exactly one hour to clear whatever remaining trash you left in the guest house out of our sight before we hand the physical evidence over to the authorities. After that, any attempt to contact us will be treated as harassment."

Chloe’s jaw tightened, her blue eyes flashing with genuine fury as she realized her standard playbook of emotional blackmail and crying tantrums wasn't going to work this time. The adults weren't yelling; they weren't bargaining; they were simply done.

"You'll regret this," Chloe hissed, pointing a manicured finger at both of them. "You're both cold, miserable people who deserve to rot in this boring house!"

With that parting theatrical shot, Chloe turned sharply on her heel, marching down the front walkway with an exaggerated stomp. She slammed the car door of her compact sedan parked at the curb a little too hard before peeling out of the driveway with an aggressive screech of tires, kicking up a small cloud of dust.

Elena watched her car disappear down the suburban street before finally letting out a long, shuddering breath. She closed the front door and locked the deadbolt with a satisfying, heavy click.

"Well," Elena said quietly, turning back to face David. "Phase one is complete. Now we prepare for the inevitable fallout from the rest of the family."
