Chapter 7: The Family Gathering

True to Elena’s prediction, the digital fallout began less than twenty-four hours after Chloe’s unsuccessful confrontation on the front porch. By Sunday evening, Elena’s phone had turned into a vibrating paperweight of frantic text messages, passive-aggressive group chat notifications, and missed calls from various relatives demanding an explanation for why the police had supposedly been contacted regarding a "family misunderstanding."
David and Elena sat together at the dining room table, surrounded by legal documents, bank statements, and printouts of the security logs. The atmosphere in the house was heavy, but no longer chaotic. They had agreed to present a unified front and refuse to engage in the emotional gymnastics their extended family specialized in.
Then came the knock on the door—not Chloe this time, but Arthur, David’s older brother and Chloe’s primary apologist. Arthur was a tall, imposing man who used blustery charm and superficial authority to control every family dynamic he stepped into. When David opened the door, Arthur didn't wait for an invitation; he barged straight into the hallway, his face twisted into an expression of profound disappointment.
"What in the world is wrong with you two?" Arthur boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Calling the police on a twenty-four-year-old girl over some property damage? Have you both completely lost your minds? She’s family!"
David closed the front door slowly, his movements deliberate and unhurried. He walked into the living room where Arthur stood waving his hands in exasperation, wearing a tailored gray suit that contrasted sharply with the casual tension of the room.
"Arthur, sit down," David said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual fraternal warmth. It was a flat, commanding tone that caused Arthur to pause mid-rant.
"I won't sit down until you explain to me why my daughter is sitting in tears at my kitchen table because her own uncle and aunt threatened to throw her in prison over a minor prank," Arthur declared, puffing out his chest.
Elena walked in from the kitchen holding a printed copy of the grayscale security still frame and the contractor's itemized bill for the pool liner replacement. She placed the papers squarely in the center of the coffee table right in front of Arthur, refusing to play his game of deflection and volume.

"It wasn't a prank, Arthur," Elena said evenly, her brown eyes locking onto her brother-in-law's gaze. "It was felony vandalism. And before you start defending her character, take a look at the timestamped grayscale footage of your daughter casually slicing our pool liner with a utility knife in the middle of the night."
Arthur scoffed, refusing to look down at the papers immediately. "Photoshop. Anyone can fake a digital image these days. You're exaggerating to justify kicking her out."
