Chapter 5: The Unwelcome Visitor

The afternoon quiet was abruptly shattered by the sharp, strident chime of the front doorbell. Elena and David froze mid-conversation in the kitchen, exchanging a swift, knowing glance. They weren't expecting any deliveries, and the mail carrier usually dropped packages by the side door without ringing.
Elena wiped her hands on a dish towel and walked toward the entryway with measured, deliberate steps. David followed closely behind, his posture instinctively protective, positioning himself just slightly to her left as she reached for the brass handle. Through the frosted glass sidelight, they could see the unmistakable silhouette of a slender figure standing on the front porch, shifting impatiently from foot to foot.
Elena pulled the door open, revealing Chloe standing on the welcome mat. The young woman looked remarkably composed for someone who had committed felony vandalism less than twelve hours prior. She wore the exact same dark red jacket seen in the security footage, though she had zipped it up higher to ward off the brisk afternoon air. Her blonde hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and her blue eyes flicked back and forth with a jittery, defiant energy.
"Well, are you going to invite me in, or are you just going to stare like ghosts?" Chloe asked, her voice dripping with an abrasive, defensive sarcasm that instantly grated on David's nerves.
David stepped forward into the doorway, completely blocking Chloe's view of the interior hallway. His face hardened into an impassive mask of absolute authority. "You have a lot of nerve showing your face here, Chloe. After what you did last night, you’re lucky the police aren't already cuffing you on the front lawn."
Chloe let out a sharp, dismissive scoff, tossing her head back with a theatrical display of disbelief. "Oh, please. Don't be so dramatic, Uncle David. It’s just an old pool. It's not like I burned the house down. You guys have insurance; just write it off as storm damage or something."
Elena stepped out from behind David, her presence commanding and ice-cold. She didn't shout, nor did she exhibit any sign of the distress that had consumed her earlier that morning. Her voice was remarkably calm, carrying an authority that momentarily wiped the smug smirk off Chloe’s face.

"Insurance fraud is a federal crime, Chloe, just like malicious destruction of private property," Elena said evenly, holding her smartphone up just high enough for her niece to see the glowing screen displaying a still frame from the grayscale security camera. "And unlike your assumptions, we aren't filing an insurance claim. We are forwarding this unedited footage, along with the repair estimates, directly to our attorney and the local precinct."
Chloe’s eyes widened slightly as she recognized the still image on the screen, the color draining from her cheeks for a brief, revealing second before she quickly masked it with a sneer.
