Chapter 10: The Contractor's Arrival

The crisp autumn air carried a sharp, earthy scent as the specialized pool contractor’s van pulled smoothly into the driveway the next morning. David was already outside, standing near the edge of the empty pool basin, watching the heavy equipment being unloaded from the vehicle. The heavy black pool liner, slashed so maliciously by Chloe just a few days prior, still bore the jagged scars of her temper tantrum, but change was finally underway.
Elena walked out from the back patio carrying a tray with two steaming mugs of coffee and a thermos for the workers. She wore her familiar light blue button-down shirt and khaki pants, her brown hair neatly secured in its usual bun. The morning sun was bright, casting long, clean shadows across the manicured lawn.
"Morning, folks," the lead contractor, a weathered man named Tom with decades of experience, greeted them as he walked over to inspect the damage once more. "We brought the replacement membrane and the specialized adhesive. We should have this section patched, sealed, and pressure-tested by late afternoon."
"Thank you, Tom," David said, handing him one of the warm mugs. "We really appreciate you fitting us in on such short notice. As you can see, this wasn't accidental wear and tear."
Tom shook his head, taking a slow sip of the coffee. "I've seen a lot of things in my thirty years in this business, Mr. Vance, but I've rarely seen a cut this deliberate. Someone took a very sharp knife and made sure every inch of that seam was compromised. Good thing your security cameras caught it all; otherwise, insurance would have been a nightmare to navigate."
"We're handling it through the legal system," Elena added, her voice calm and steady as she handed out the rest of the warm drinks to the crew. "The police have all the evidence they need."

Tom nodded approvingly before turning back to his crew to give instructions on setting up the heavy-duty heat-sealing equipment. The rhythmic hum of generators soon filled the backyard, drowning out the lingering echoes of the past week's tension.
David and Elena stood side by side on the patio, watching the workers lower the new rolls of heavy black vinyl into the basin. The physical act of repair felt symbolic. Every patch laid down, every seam welded tight, represented another layer of restoration for their home and their lives. The emotional scars would take time to fade completely, but the structural integrity of their world was being actively reinforced.
