Chapter 8: Echoes of the Past

The interior of the cabin smelled of aged cedar, woodsmoke, and old paper. Marcus moved swiftly through the rooms, snapping on battery-powered lanterns that cast a warm, amber glow across the rustic furniture and stone fireplace. A heavy oak dining table sat in the center of the room, surrounded by mismatched wooden chairs.

Arthur gently laid Julian down on a vintage plaid sofa near the unlit hearth. He draped an extra wool blanket over the boy, who curled into a tight ball, his breathing finally settling into a deep, healing slumber.

Elena walked over to the small kitchen alcove, inspecting the cabinets. "There's canned food, bottled water, and a shortwave radio in the pantry. No internet, but we have a secure satellite uplink in the basement if you need to access your offline drives."

Arthur walked over to the wooden dining table, pulling a heavy leather briefcase from beneath his coat. He placed it on the rough surface and popped the twin brass latches with a sharp click. Inside lay a rows of encrypted storage drives, a satellite phone, and a thick stack of legal documents tied with a red ribbon.

"This is everything," Arthur said, staring down at the papers. "The complete architecture of the security system, along with the personal ledgers detailing Reed’s embezzlement over the past five years."

Marcus walked over, leaning his hands on the edge of the table. "If you have his ledgers, why haven't you gone to the federal authorities?"

"Because Reed owns them too," Arthur said bitterly, looking up to meet Marcus’s hardened gaze. "Every regulatory agency, every oversight committee—they've all been greased by his PAC funds. The moment I walk into a federal building, I'm arrested as an accomplice, and Julian is placed into state custody where Reed's operatives can reach him just as easily as they did at the gala."

Elena crossed her arms, walking slowly toward the table. "Which means we play offense. We don't run, and we don't surrender. We use his greed against him."

"How?" Arthur asked.

"By leaking the financial ledgers to the international press syndicate while simultaneously locking him out of the encryption keys," Elena said, her eyes gleaming with sharp determination. "Reed needs those keys by Monday morning to validate the merger with the overseas shell companies. If he doesn't get them, his investors will panic, his stock will plummet, and his entire financial empire will implode before he even realizes where the strike came from."

Arthur stared at her for a long moment, the sheer audacity of the plan washing over him. It was dangerous, volatile, and entirely dependent on precision timing. But as he looked back toward the sofa where Julian lay sleeping peacefully, he knew there was no other choice left.
