Chapter 10: Shadows in the Cabin

Marcus pressed his back against the wooden wall beside the basement door, his finger resting firmly along the frame of his weapon. The sounds above intensified—heavy, deliberate footsteps moving across the pine floorboards toward the living room area where Julian was sleeping.
"Dad..." a small, terrified voice echoed faintly down the stairwell.
Arthur’s heart stopped. Julian was awake.
"Don't move, buddy! Stay under the blanket!" Arthur shouted upward, ignoring the tactical danger of revealing their position.
Before Marcus could react, the basement door was kicked open with a thunderous crash. Splintered wood flew across the concrete steps as a man in a black tactical vest and night-vision goggles stepped into the aperture, leveling a submachine gun downward.
Marcus moved with lethal speed. He grabbed the barrel of the weapon, shoving it upward just as a deafening burst of gunfire shattered the concrete wall above their heads, sending a shower of abrasive dust and sparks raining down over the stairs. Marcus twisted the man’s arm with a sickening pop of joint cartilage, pulling him down the concrete steps into the basement. The intruder hit the floor hard, unconscious before he even stopped sliding.
Elena was already moving past them, bounding up the stairs into the kitchen. Arthur hesitated for a fraction of a second, his paternal instincts warring with the tactical necessity of staying hidden, before following close behind Marcus.
The living room was a scene of terrifying chaos. The front window had been smashed inward, shards of glass glistening across the rug. Julian was huddled beneath the sofa, his wide, frightened eyes staring out from the darkness, his small hands clutching his throat again out of pure psychological trauma.
Standing near the broken window was a second operative, his weapon raised, turning toward the kitchen where Elena had vanished.
"Drop it," Elena’s voice rang out from the shadows near the hallway.
The operative spun around, but it was too late. Elena swept his legs out from under him with a brutal roundhouse kick, sending him crashing into the heavy oak dining table. The briefcase containing the encrypted drives slid across the wood, spilling papers and hardware in all directions.
Marcus rushed into the room, securing the second intruder with heavy zip-ties while Elena knelt beside the sofa, gently coaxing Julian out from his hiding place.

"It's okay, Julian. You're safe. Look at me," Elena whispered softly, her tough exterior melting into profound tenderness as she pulled the trembling boy into her arms.
Arthur dropped to his knees beside them, wrapping his arms around both Julian and Elena. The immediate threat was neutralized, but the message was crystal clear: Jonathan Reed’s reach was absolute, and time had officially run out.
