Chapter 11: The Ultimatum

Dawn broke over the pine forest, washing the damp mountain landscape in pale, cold light. The shattered window of the cabin had been temporarily boarded up with thick plywood, and the two bound intruders were locked securely in the damp cellar beneath the floorboards.
Arthur sat at the scarred wooden dining table, his face illuminated by the harsh blue light of the satellite phone screen. The encrypted transmission had successfully bypassed Reed’s proxy blocks; the investigative files were now safely in the hands of the global press syndicate, scheduled for automated release at noon if the dead-man switch was not deactivated.
The satellite phone buzzed violently against the wood. The caller ID displayed a restricted, high-security enterprise routing number.
Arthur took a slow, steadying breath, pressing the speakerphone button. "Reed."
"Arthur," a smooth, cultured voice answered from the other end of the line, carrying an eerie tone of calm corporate detachment. "I must admit, you’re far more resourceful than my analysts predicted. Sending my men on a wild goose chase into the wilderness while you upload files to the press... it’s dramatic, but ultimately futile."
"The files are already in circulation, Jonathan," Arthur replied, his voice steady and controlled. "If anything happens to me or my son, the kill-switch triggers automatically. Your entire network goes public in three hours."
A soft, condescending chuckle echoed through the speaker. "You think a few leaked ledgers can touch me, Arthur? I own the regulators, I own the board, and soon, I will own your company. But let’s be reasonable. We don't need a public bloodbath. You bring the original decryption keys to the old rail depot downtown by noon, and I’ll ensure your boy receives all the medical care and protection he’ll ever need."
"If I wanted to negotiate, I wouldn't have run," Arthur said coldly.
"You didn't run to escape me, Arthur; you ran to protect Julian," Reed countered, his tone hardening into an unmistakable threat. "And how long do you think you can keep him hidden in the woods? A week? A month? Eventually, he has to eat. Eventually, he needs to breathe. And every breath he takes is another opportunity for a unfortunate... accident."
The line went dead with a sharp click.
Arthur slammed the phone down onto the table, his chest heaving with restrained rage. Across the room, Julian was sitting quietly with Elena, who was quietly playing a game of cards with him to keep his mind off the tension in the room. The boy looked up, his wide eyes meeting Arthur’s across the cabin.

"He’s not giving up," Arthur said, looking at Marcus and Elena.
"Neither are we," Elena said, standing up from the table. "Reed thinks he’s hunting us. But he doesn't realize he just walked right into our kill zone."
