Chapter 5: Unspoken Truths

The silence in the hospital room grew heavy, punctuated only by the rhythmic beep of the monitor and the distant patter of rain against the reinforced glass window. Arthur set the paper cup down on the bedside table without tasting the coffee. He looked at Elena, taking in the composed posture and the sharp intelligence gleaming in her dark eyes. This was not the demeanor of an ordinary banquet waitress.
"Who are you, Elena?" Arthur asked, his voice low and devoid of anger, carrying only the exhausting weight of inevitability.
Elena stepped further into the room, folding her hands neatly in front of her black dress. "Let's just say that a corporate restructuring five years ago left a lot of intelligence analysts out of work. Working catering is a great way to blend into high-society gatherings where powerful men make fatal mistakes." She glanced briefly at Julian, who stirred slightly in his sleep before settling back into stillness. "And you, Arthur Vance, are a very powerful man who just made a very public mistake by bringing your son into the open."
Arthur leaned back in his chair, running a hand through his styled dark hair, messing the gelled strands into soft disarray. "It wasn't a mistake. I thought we were safe. The foundation gala was supposed to be a secure environment. Private security, vetted guest lists, controlled kitchens."
"Controlled by whom?" Elena countered sharply. "Jonathan Reed?"
Arthur’s eyes flashed with sudden, sharp alarm. "How do you know that name?"
"I've been tracking the asset transfers from your firm to offshore accounts in Zurich for the past three months," Elena said calmly, pulling a small folded piece of paper from her pocket and placing it beside the coffee cup. "Reed doesn't just want your company's proprietary encryption algorithms; he wants to dismantle everything you’ve built. And yesterday, he realized you weren't going to surrender the keys peacefully."
Arthur unfolded the paper with trembling fingers. Inside was a printed manifest of the catering staff for the gala, with Jonathan Reed's private seal stamped discreetly in the bottom corner. The realization hit Arthur with the force of a physical blow. The attack on Julian had not been a random act of malice; it was a targeted warning shot designed to break Arthur's psychological defenses.

"He poisoned the raspberry tart," Arthur whispered, the pieces finally locking together in his mind. "Julian loves raspberries. I told the head chef about the allergy weeks ago."
"The head chef was replaced four days ago by one of Reed’s shell companies," Elena stated matter-of-factly. "You're playing a high-stakes game, Arthur, and your son is the pawn they intend to sacrifice first. If you want him to survive the week, we need to move him out of this hospital within the hour."
