Chapter 12: The Rail Depot

The abandoned rail depot on the industrial outskirts of the city stood like a rusted skeleton against the overcast afternoon sky. Massive steel girders crisscrossed overhead, casting geometric shadows across the cracked concrete platforms where freight trains had once unloaded tons of industrial cargo.
A sleek black sedan idled near the main loading bay, its tinted windows opaque against the dreary daylight. Two burly security operatives stood on either side of the vehicle, their hands resting casually inside their heavy coats.
From a high vantage point inside the skeletal control tower three stories above, Arthur focused the crosshairs of a digital spotting scope onto the sedan. Beside him, Marcus adjusted the long-range transmitter linked to the city's municipal broadcast network.
"They're waiting," Marcus reported quietly. "Just like you planned."
Arthur lowered the scope, his face set in stone. He wore a dark wool overcoat, his hands shoved deep into his pockets. "And Reed?"
"He’s inside the vehicle," Elena’s voice crackled over the tactical radio from a perimeter position near the rail tracks. "He brought a localized signal blocker to intercept the keys, but he didn't bring an extraction team. He thinks he’s holding all the cards."
Arthur turned and walked down the metal stairs of the control tower toward the ground-level exit. "Time to show him he's bankrupt."
Minutes later, Arthur stepped out from the shadow of the rusted loading bay, walking deliberately across the open concrete platform toward the idling sedan. The wind whipped his dark hair across his forehead. He stopped twenty feet away from the vehicle.
The rear door of the sedan swung open smoothly, and Jonathan Reed stepped out. Reed looked immaculate in a charcoal-grey designer suit, his styled dark hair untouched by the elements. He adjusted his silk tie with a placid, confident smile.
"Arthur," Reed greeted smoothly, spreading his hands in a gesture of false hospitality. "I knew you were smart enough to see reason. Do you have the keys?"
May you like
Arthur reached slowly into his coat pocket, pulling out a small, metallic silver drive. He held it up between two fingers, letting the dull daylight catch the polished surface. "I have everything you want, Jonathan. But before I hand it over, we're going to have a conversation about how this ends."
Reed smiled, taking a slow step forward. "You don't get to negotiate terms, Arthur. You lost."
